I would agree re the potential for roaming to become a new billing moment for the carriers.

The EU forced the carriers to introduce EU wide non-roaming tariffs IIRC. Now we are out I would expect that they will all have a distanced dinner one evening and then they will all introduce a new "option" one month.

You will have EU wide tariffs and UK only tariffs to which you can add bolt on benefits that cover you for your holidays.

Just a guess.

It does mean that they do not have to do any home work as they just copy and paste the old documents they had 10 years ago!

Worth remembering that some of the mobile operators have wholly owned operations throughout Europe. I know EE do and am hoping that they use this to create a competitive advantage for themselves by maintaining the Europe wide roaming indefinitely.

If EE keep full roaming then the others will have to follow, I feel. The market is just too competitive.

BUT I can see a "discounted UK only" rate being offered......

Paul I understood EE to be owned by BT for some time now. EE/BT have roaming relationships with many carriers but do not have their own licence in most/all as I understood it.
Since most of the countries sold off spectrum individually the carriers had to buy a licence in each country if they wanted to actually run the air time platform?
If you go to Germany the phone will not show EE but usually DT or T-Mobil. I have had it show O2-DE as well in the past.

Big players like Vodafone will have a licence in many countries but used to pair in some (France will see your Voda SIM using SFR I think?) which they call secondary markets.
DT were also in this larger category.
Telefonica (through O2 in some places) were present directly in several markets as well.

If you look carefully they tend to hop as a group. I would never describe it as a cabal of course.

But you have alternatives, don't you?

Not in Spain... Almost impossible to find a public phone nowadays.

It's much the same here, that is a library picture from the 1970's by the look of it, most of these are now a library, defibrillator, plant exchange, book swap or cake exchange down our way.
Finding one that works that hasn't doubled up as a urinal is somewhat unusual.

And the odd one in private ownership parked in someone's garden...

Whilst sat navs etc make life much easier, especially if there are major holdups, congestion etc., there is nothing quite like planning a route before hand, and making detailed direction notes on a note pad, suitably backed up with large maps. It keeps the passenger involved with the progress and direction of the journey reducing endless being ' driven' fatigue for the passenger and usually creates interaction during the journey. It also allows you the opportunity whilst planning the journey to check out different places along the way, on the internet, before you leave.
