And encourages friendly family discussions when getting lost. Joking aside we keep the sat nav as a back up only for the reasons you state.

I totally agree with those such as DeeJay who have already urged you to eschew the French Autoroutes in favour of the Routes Nationales.

I never found my Morgan to be particularly enjoyable to drive on a motorway; one of the real joys of my experience of Morgan ownership was that it persuaded me on most occasions to opt for the scenic route. As a result, in the 5 years we owned the car, we got to discover and enjoy much of "la France profonde", which we would otherwise have missed completely as we flashed past on the motorway. There are so many wonderful places to see and visit off the beaten track, and in the Morgan, we always received a warm welcome wherever we went

Mind you, for any forays onto the Autoroutes, I highly recommend the tag for motorway péages as per MJF and others.

Not quite so sure about it always being friendly, when lost......the best bit about touring on the Harley (before they were fitted with sat navs) the helmet intercom system had a PTT switch, which over-rode the microphone of the passenger, proved very useful from time to time, the silent bliss that ensued whilst the better half vented their frustration. She found a work around which usually involved a repeatedly prodded finger in my shoulder or a not so gentle tapping of my helmet......but for a while that PTT was on occasion bliss.

Totally agree! This is something my wife and I love while driving the 3-Wheeler. We prepare in advance a roadbook, with pictures and comments and then print it, and carry it in a transparent map pocket so the copilot can read and tell the driver about next turns and points of interest.

Oh dear I went the other way on planning our tour some time back.

We did not set an agenda. We then had two nights in a place, used tripadvisor to choose the next one and hopped to it using splatnav so we spent a minimum time in the car and more in the (Bar) destination.

I always get it wrong.

When touring I prepare a detailed tulip contour route in advance. We also run the sat nav in case of delays, but where we go and the times we travel, the roads are mostly empty.

We do two versions of touring. One as Alistair suggested where driving is minimal and staying over is extended for long hikes.

The second is a proper road trip, where there are full days driving and minimal stopover time. Our indulgence is a proper evening meal with wine where we stop. No roughing it.

To do this properly, especially in the Highlands takes a lot of time and proper planning to avoid having a one night gap in the middle.

The other thing I find on the way back from the Highlands....it's an eight hour blast. When we come back in one go, I wish we'd stopped somewhere. When we stop somewhere, I wish we'd carried on home.

My mobile usage is minimal and I have a old iPhone. I have an £8/month giffgaff sim deal that covers my usage. UK cover only and I need to contact them to get foreign access. I don’t know the details of any potential costs, if any, though. Maybe just limits on duration of travel. No intention of foreign travel yet so no need to query. The carrying over of mobile regs re costs seems to be lost in the Brexit deal details. Does anyone know if there is any info? I haven’t seen specific details yet. Maybe Farage will know? He seemed upbeat in the pre referendum publicity!

You just need to boot up the steam powered laptop you have hiding in the backroom Sospan.
