It is a critical component. I would buy a replacement

Can't think of any welding to hold the crossframe, it's all bolts.but as others have said check that the chassis is aligned. There does appear to be some impact damage to the inner wing.

So best I can tell the chassis is square/level. I have dropped an order for a new cross head at Morgan Spares. Terry Foxen says I don’t need to take the wings off but does suggest removing the side lamps so they flex a bit. Am excited to learn what part of this job is waaaay harder than everyone says it is (like just putting the oiler bolt back in!). But legitimately excited to actually do it. I’ll post an update when I actually get the stuff and embark on the job.

Just an aside to this thread I have a picture of the Crosshead of my 4/4 being brazed together at the factory in 1982

Update- crosshead is out! Next step, put the new one in.
Before I do that I want to scrub up the exposed frame and inner wings, touch up the paint.

In order to get the cross head out I removed the radiator, grille, loosened the bar between the wings, removed both brake connections (the ones that pass through the inner wings, they directly block the crosshead wings from rotating upwards, a critical step in removal), and the aluminum skid (that thing that keeps the tire from rubbing the frame). I then unbolted all the cross head bolts, and you tip it forward and can slide it out. Used a rubber mallet.

So far so good. Once all cleaned up, I’ll get the new one in, clamp, measure, twice, then drill the new one.

Thanks for update Nelson. I'm guessing you already have the replacement crosshead.

Out of interest, what stops the chassis rails from springing or moving when the crosshead is removed?
