Many thanks for that link. That was a fascinating read and really shows what can happen when square pegs are put with square holes. Some v clever and decent people in all areas making a difference to our lives without looking for recognition. Hope I’m not being jingoistic but makes me proud and thankful and hope these efforts and skill sets can put to great use for the benefit of all who need it around the world esp the developing world/ poorer nations HB

That is a good read. Especially interesting is: But in terms of how things operated, the Vaccine Taskforce is being seen inside government as exemplary. ‘It makes us ask: is it possible to get things done at this speed and with this competence outside of a pandemic?’ says one minister. An unpublished Treasury report on the process is understood to describe it as a blueprint for an industrial strategy in the future. Finding people with real expertise and applying them to a problem has produced excellent results. Let us hope the learning really hits home throughout government, opposition and civil service.

Absolutely this. After a catalogue of egregious, embarrassing, and expensive errors that have given us the world's highest per capita death rate, the powers that be have learned some very hard lessons over the last year. Doing the job so well is excellent work, and very impressive. Figuring out how the job could be done so speedily and efficiently is if anything even more impressive. Having the courage to place trust in people to do the first two is possibly the most impressive of all, given the natural tendency of politicians to think they know best.

Coupled with a great deal of "not invented here" and "we've always done it this way" throughout the civil service. A business associate of mine learnt his Strategic Planning and Process Improvement as a senior army officer in Northern Ireland. He honed his skills in an environment where the consequences of his decisions were literally life or death. On leaving the army, he set up as a freelance consultant and landed some work in a large hospital trust. He was constantly bombarded with : "The trouble with you is that you have never worked in the NHS" To which he often retorted: "The trouble with you is that you have never worked anywhere else"

That kind of entrenched thinking is depressingly common in large private sector organisations too. We always used to joke that the kiss of death for a fast-growing dynamic company was when they became large enough to need an HR department. At that point following correct procedures became more important than success - it was thought better to do things right than to do the right thing. I always used to start any design workshop that I ran by writing on a flip chart: "If we always do what we've always done, then we'll always get what we've always got"

Indeed.
I used to think that the threshold for stagnation in a large business was when it created its own calendar.
On the plus side, I have witnessed some excellent examples of improvement - in mid size businesses. One firm I worked for reduced an electronics assembly cycle time from 24 hours to 6. This was achieved by a bright team leader and the people on the line who applied the continuous improvement tools that everyone in the business had been taught. Similar improvements throughout the factory led to a massive change. From 60-65% complete and on time deliveries, they went to 97%+. By this time, if I was showing customers round the factory I could approach any operator on the shop floor and ask them to explain what they were doing.
