I require a new steering rack gaitor for a 1985 +8 (jack knight st. rack) someone suggested using a Borg+Beck BSG3190 that is fitted to a Saab 900. has anybody tried using this gaitor?

Hi David. I replaced them on my 1999 Plus8 last summer which presumably has the same rack ? I was told that MAPCO 17753 bellows also fit, but I just got a kit from SimonH at Simon @ Sifab.co.uk who is on this forum and was very helpful. (No connection) I found the most difficult job was persuading the lower steering column joint off the racks input drive spline. I removed the pinch bolt and carefully knocked in a wedge to expand the joint, not forgetting to paint a witness mark to allow correct realignment on rebuild. Hope that helps ?

As you ought to replace the weird shaped locking tab washer you may as well buy the proper gaiter too, most decent Mog dealers seem to keep a couple in stock as they are a fairly regular MOT failure

Thanks for the reply, I am getting the kit from Sifab, once again Simon is a big help.

they are a fairly regular MOT failure Thats a fact sadly, and given the price of the flimsy things, I'm glad I found SimonH's, unfortunately just after I'd already bought the JK original from a dealer

Someone is making a killing at around £100 a pop, fitting extra, + VAT! My 1994 +8 is still on it's first gaiter. My 2002 4/4 is on it's 5th. That doesn't seem like consistent quality over the years to me.

Whatever one used lubricate well with grease before fitting. Helps avoid accidental ripping on installation.

The Factory uses Morris lubricants K400EP semi-fluid grease.

Quite so, mine went just after the MOT seemingly, and I thought it had to be replaced with a Morgan JK gaiter, so paid the money- then I found Simons with the adapters at around a third the price, so I have an original spare now, just in case I feel like going concourse I suppose!
