The Portugese fans were bonkers in Italy .... daren't think what they'll be like on home turf 🙂 ... Hillclimb in Europe is a very different thing .... paid 'works' drivers, big transporters, big teams very high profile .... not F1 but at least F3 level .... whereas in the UK it's an amateur sport with family and friends as crew and cars paid for out of the driver's pocket ..... they weren't used to the friendly 'family' atmosphere in the British team ...looking after each other's kids while drivers took their turn at the hill, helping each other with spares and spannering between races and partying and eating together in a big mob in the evenings .... that sort of thing is rare at the top there.
Big fan base though who are wildly enthusiastic and dedicated
Looking forward to Braga.

Ps ... If it's anything like here, the 'classic' hillclimbs are very serious .... scares me rigid seeing how hard they push with no roll bars or seatbelts .... at my local hill, Doune, the only time we've needed the air-ambulance recently was a mad historic driver getting chucked out of his rolling car (no drivers were permanently harmed in the production of this post🙂)
The only hillclimb I have seen live is the VSCC event at Wiscombe, Martin and and I have enjoyed it a few times and enjoyed meeting and chatting with Sue Darbyshire, a most engaging charming and very talented lady. We met up with Gambalunga too which was really nice one year, it's a typical Devon layed back affair full of friendly people with a common cause.
I thoroughly enjoy (via you tube) the Swiss and German legs of the European competition but it's a whole new ball game and sadly some fatalaties along the way, it's a bit like watching the IOM from the riders perspective it all looks frighteningly fast and when it goes wrong someone is going to hurt bad, but it is hypnotic viewing.
Mario and his son Duarte compete in his Plus 4 and M3W and as I recall are pretty competitive at Caramulo their local fun event.
p.s. I lied I have seen the Bouley Bay climb a few times whilst timing work visits correctly, quite a climb that one, straight uphill from the pub, called The Black Dog .

Aside from the CI, Wiscombe is the only British Championship track I haven't driven ... hoping to remedy that this year .... no Channel Islands rounds this year .... claimed by covid uncertainty .... the paddocks there are so crushed it would be impossible to socially distance them.
I've watched Marios videos .... he hustles his Morgan along very nicely indeed!!
We'll have to pop along and see you when this happens, let us know which meeting you'll be attending at W and I'll give Martin a shout too, we can all have an ale together.

It's a seriously long tow from here but hopefully the planets will align and the plague subside!! 🙂

If only I could do it in 11 hours .... with the camper towing the racer it's a two dayer with an overnight in some service station cursing whoever invented the refrigerated lorry as their diesel compressors fire up every 20 minutes!! 🤨
Yes lets hope you can make it all the rules and what have you's going on. We mentioned this meeting going back a while now..
That is one long trek, I used to get to Earls Hill Stirling in 8.5 hours on a good day going back 30 years now long before plod realised there was serious money to be made out of the motorist. I can't imagine it towing to be honest you must possess the patience of Job..

I am a 68 year old child who loves the pops and bangs that all our 3 cars produce!
Yes , all my cars pop and bang and none of them are inefficient , sports exhausts are designed to do this , nothing to do with the engine being out of tune . If anyone has been to classiclemans the group c cars sound amazing , pops bangs and flames !
Geneva 2016 plus 8' The Green Godess' 4 side exits .
The RS6 was the first car I had that did pops'n'bangs but only when you put it into sport mode. It had a performance exhaust yet was so quiet it was a bit boring so if you wanted to hear the PnB's you had to hit the sport button. At this point everything went rabid and it tried to eat numberplates off the cars in front if you twitched. On a black Audi estate I always felt a bit naff and so avoided using it. Maybe it was the fact that the car was so sober and the engine was so quiet that they stood out as childish and out of place.
The Aero Coupe with the dual side exhausts seems to do it a bit on overrun but not excessively, I quite like it on the Coupe as the car is different enough to get away with it.
If you put the ML63 into sports node it does it a little and it also seems to perform a blip of the throttle on change down at higher revs. On a lorry that size it actually makes me laugh as it is so out of place. Given the thing is so big and heavy I don't tend to do it very often. However the AMG engines make such a wonderful burble normally that a bit of additional PnB does not feel as out of place as the Audi did. It is also not quite as excessive as the Audi's.
From a smaller highly tuned carb fed engine I think it sounds brilliant. The Dolomite I raced had a hairy cam and twin 40's and I loved it for all the noises and bangs (from the induction not almost everywhere else on the car) and I could not get enough of it. However I was 22 and perhaps less thoughtful.
I dislike the over-wrought element of it being added to every mental hatch now, it seems to goad them into demonstrating it at every single opportunity.
Everyone loves a Morgan. Even me, unless it's broken again.
Never had a car that pops and bangs and it's not remotely high on my list of desirable features ..... as a consequence of the nature of a sporty car being used hard through a mountain pass then it's fine by me .... as a fashion item on a hatch full of chavs round and round a housing estate keeping everyone awake in the early hours then, nope .... like most things, there's a time and a place.

I think this probably lies at the heart of my dislike. When I was a kid, the backfiring smoky old nails that some people used to drive around in were universally derided by those who took a pride in tuning their engines correctly.
We were all as skint as a family of travelling rabbits so we all worked on our own bikes and cars, and getting your carburation/mixture wrong was one of the cardinal sins, probably because getting it spot on in the days of simple carbs was a bit of a dark art and so seen as a badge of honour in the home mechanicking brigade.
Fair enough, it's difficult to stop unburnt fuel getting into the exhaust when one slams the throttle shut after a full-bore run down the Mulsanne straight or wherever, but is it quite so cool to do it when you slow down for the traffic lights outside Sainsbury's?

My very first car mod was fitting a big bore Peco exhaust to my Singer Chamois, made not a halfpenny difference but sounded good in the alleys, some things never leave you so carry on doing whatever it is that keeps you young at heart George et al in the audio fan area
And here is a bit of joy for us fans, at around 1:17 I would love my Plus 8 to sound like this, my MOT spanners man tells me we need to put straight throughs on... I am reluctant..
Make the best of it boys it'll all be screaming pedestrians being run over by milk floats in a few years from now
