TBM,
seriously impressive, well done to you and the team, and the kids. If we get to the Easter Holidays without a spike across the country then it will be very well worth it! Fingers Crossed!

Just be thankful you aren't in Italy, this is a whatsapp conversation with my sister who has a holiday flat near Rome
[08:55, 12/03/2021] Shirley: In Italy all key workers/public sector get jab first. Tuscany where Anna Maria lives is in the red Zone ( high alert). To encourage testing in her area, the local mayor had a test. He has already had 2 doses of Pfizer and he tested positive so his gesture has had the opposite effect. A lot of doctors in Tuscany are sceptical of the jab and are refusing to have it. [09:10, 12/03/2021] John: Was it a lateral flow test. They give about 30% false positives. [09:39, 12/03/2021] Shirley: I said that to Anna Maria. It is causing problems here with schools. She said a scientist in Italy tested a kiwi fruit with the test and it was positive. You only have to have something up your nose that will test positive and the test gives a wrong reading. They have also been sold some duff PPE masks in Italy so she is now having to throw away a lot of masks since she cannot see patients with them. They came from China. They have a new technical leader since the previous one could not get an agreement on how to spend all the money they have received from the EU. It is a big mess but no one wanted an election at the moment.
I hope Gambalunga & Ali are in a better position than that description of Tuscany

I would seriously question the 30% False Positives on LFT.
In the last week we have now done over 4000 LFT on the kids (3000+) and staff (1000+). We have only had 1 positive, which has then been confirmed by a postive PCR test (message from the family today and they have all now been tested positive).

This seems more accurate: Oxford University on LFT the overall false positive rate was 0.32%, although this was lowered to 0.06% in a lab setting.

To be clear I was told of the +ve results found up to 30% could be false which is why you follow up with a PCR. I guess I was wrong or we are using different metrics.

Might be of interest - we've been LFT testing kids all week, and staff have been home testing twice a week. Had about a 95+% consent rate from parents. Most of those who have refused testing have also refused to send kids to school previously due to concerns, or have told us their children are exempt from wearing masks. Make of that what you will.
So far we've tested all 1900 kids once, and 600 have had their second test today. We will continue with second and third tests through the next four school days and then I think the kids swtich to home testing twice a week. Staff (350ish) have had at least three tests now - one in school, and two at home. We will continue with twice weekly home testing for the forseeable future.
We have only had one positive LFT so far, which resulted in self isolation for them, the five kids sat around them in the testing station, and their sibling. The next day, one of their household had a positive PCR case which gives us a bit of confidence in the accuracy of the LFT test.
It's a bit of a pain, and wipes out two years groups a day from 8 to 10.30am each day. Takes a large number of staff to supervise and test 600 kids too, but if it stops a massive spike in cases/infections it will be worth it.
Well done all you teachers, that is such encouraging news and brilliant results

We were told to consider it as a first wave test to flush out all possible positives and then get them and related contacts to PCR as quickly as possible. Whilst it may risk a false positive that is (sort of) a good thing as it means they will get into the medical system quicker than if they had not been tested. Hence more chance of treatment and so recovery with less effects.
Better to have than have not.

I fully agree. It is a classic QC method where you narrow down a failure. But I understood with schools PCRs aren't on offer unlike work based tests.
