This alone is enough reason to stay clear.

I think property is still a good bet, either the expansion of personal living quarters or a buy to let. Again as others have said, if you have money looking for a home there are not many interesting returns to be had on the high street, banks, financial services etc and so it becomes tempting to consider something unusual. For myself, in retirement, I will sit with a flat, a small piece of land, low yield safe havens and leave the Wild West to others.
I parked some money (geddit) in a Morgan a couple of years ago, that seems to be holding up.
I think of Bitcoin as an oasis in the desert, it may or may not be there when you arrive.

An old friend who is an independent IFA says that it is best to think about investments as a three legged stool with:
Leg 1 = Property
Leg 2 = Pensions
Leg 3 = Other investments

Certainly over here land and property are sound investments. With interest rates so low (1.9%) using your money in investments accounts by taking out a fixed rate liquidity loan against your own money for say 7 years (even if the markets crash to 3.5% return) to buy land at a growth of 4% (LY growth at 10%) is something to seriously consider. As they say money makes money and it has worked for me, but it is not a game to dabble with.

I second the comments about SJP. I am happy to pay someone to do the "dabbling" for me, but do expect to pay a sensible amount for the job.
Paul's 3 legged stool also presents a good balance to things financial.

Be very aware of their high advisory fees, entry charges and transaction costs.
Oh and and read the reviews - very telling.

Yep, have an ex company pension with them, basically you're paying them to gamble with your (very) hard earned cash, Caveat Emptor !

So a burp has occurred in the Bitcoin universe https://edition.cnn.com/2021/08/11/tech/crypto-hack/index.html

$600m

Then the thief gave it back, saying it was to show the company was not secure.

Not certain that would have happened in the old days or Reggie & Ronnie.

Alistair the cynic in me would tend to think that the "bankers" put their heads together to try to undermine Bitcoin, and may have been the ones to hack it... if indeed it was hacked... confused2

That completely flies in the face of past experience. Remember, the financial crisis was as much as anything about bankers not understanding what they were buying and selling. I see no possibility that they would understand enough about crypto to be able to deal profitably in them let alone knobble them. In any event crypto is jno threat to the main street banks.

The risk is the government or govt sponsored hackers ( China, Russia) knobbling the crypto system

For those who are interested here is an explanation of how Bitcoin and the others work.

As for St James Place, they have the reputation of being a decent outfit but charging high. The stats show that 80% of fund managers fail to match the index which surely is the minimum you would expect. And the 20% that do is not the same 20% each year. But there is another issue. SJP was founded by Rothschild and Weinberg and invested their personal money. Then it was bought by HBOS who in turn were bought out by Lloyds, the latter being described in an investment magazine as the banking equivalent of the civil service. Huge corporate bureaucracy doesnt usually mean success.

I dont know about a 3 legged stool but certainly a two legged one makes sense with the two legs being property and investments / pension. But many have too much in property, quietly forgetting thats what their house is.
