Disconnect the 2 fuel lines from top of fuel pump assembly: push in the small tab at the edge the connectors with a small, flat head screw driver, then pull off the fuel line (have a rag under it to catch a dribble of gas). Rotate the connectors if you do not see the small tab.
Then remove the black plastic cover: This is a two part cover with a small center section partially covering the fuel connectors. This smaller piece is silicone sealed onto the larger cover and is also taped at one end with vinyl/electrical tape. A small knife will be handy to cut the through the seal (carefully). It's is actually quite easy once you see how it is done.
Remove the black cover and you will see two electrical connectors on the top of the assembly- one is in use for power, the other is not (presumably it is used for the fuel level sender that this fuel assembly usually comes with but is deleted as the M3W has a VDO fuel sender next to the pump assembly).
Test the existing electrical lead to the pump for 12 volt power: connect voltage meter and turn on the ignition, you should get a reading for 4 or so seconds while the fuel pump relay activates.
If power is good, test the fuel pump connection itself for continuity. If you do not get continuity, this means the wiring from the fuel pump housing connector to the fuel pump is either disconnected, shorted, bad or the electric fuel pump itself is bad. The next step is to remove, inspect and replace the fuel pump assembly if there are no loose connections inside.

Hey folks. Reviving a very old thread here in search of some advice... I’ve had trouble starting two times in the last two days. First time went as follows: drove 200 miles, parked for 1 hour, started, reversed 100 meters, shut off for 5 minutes. Tried to start and had trouble. Engine cranks but wouldn’t start... 4-5 times. Waited 10 minutes. Tried again and it fired up.

This morning on a very cold start had similar trouble. Only thing that got it going was giving the gas pedal a push while cranking. Fired right up and drove fine.

Haven’t checked fuel pressure but leads, plugs, fuses all OK. Fuel pump makes usual noises when turning the key.

Any thoughts? I’ve never tried pushing the gas pedal when starting, never had to. I’m wondering if this method having worked might suggest that fuel pump is my issue?

Fuel pump
Had same scenario on one of our customer cars, Owner drove 100 miles, returned home, stopped outside garage, opened garage door to reverse in - car then stopped and wouldn't start again.
Next day started okay and drove 50 miles - returned home, got out to open garage door, put in reverse, car stopped wouldn't start again.
Following week tried car - started - went out for a drive, cut out whilst driving....recovered home on back of recovery truck....
Fuel pump had failed.
Replaced with the Walbro upgrade kit - started straight away and been fine since.
