Interesting stats....
1. Yes, the UK rollout is doing quite well. 55% adult population with 1+ doses per https://coronavirus.data.gov.uk/details/vaccinations
2. The US, despite its much-derided healthcare system, has hit 26% (all population) with 1+ doses per https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2020/us/covid-19-vaccine-doses.html
3. The EU ... less than half the US performance it seems! https://www.ecdc.europa.eu/en/covid-19/vaccine-roll-out-overview

However we can still expect the UK to headline on no of deaths attributed to COVID, although the reporting data is less standardised for that! No 9 in world rankings / no 1 in major economies... https://edition.cnn.com/interactive/2020/health/coronavirus-maps-and-cases/

Meanwhile the EU. Are stockpiling the AZ vaccine according to the press. Sorry but mad as a box of frogs is an apt description.

Agreed I never liked Mr Junker but he at least sees the error of Macron, Merkle & van den Leyen in this. SFQ makes it quite clear this not the route to follow.

Macron recently told reporters this marked "the end of naivety" from the EU.

Eu naive? That bloke does come up with some eye watering “spin” he even makes Tony Blair look tame. laugh2

Really, EU bashing when one reviews the facts and what they have done publicly to undermine their own vaccination programme without seeming to grasp the impact on public vaccine confidence. Whilst the population goes unvaccinated, Covid cases are rising and sadly with it a rising death toll beside the ongoing economic and social harm being done. Currently no apparent way out of the crisis. without resorting to new draconian laws, so self centred as to question whether they are truly a rules based organisation who believe in personal property rights.

They have at a single stroke inflicted such harm on their standing in the world and lead to disharmony between members and the EU and among member states with each other. The world looks on in horror and amazement and the likes of Russia and China see their sphere of influence growing by the day. The EU single handedly has given China and Russia significant soft power influence thru their vaccine availability and reduced the likelihood of any future vaccines being produced affordably for COVAX countries. Sure we have all got it wrong and the EU deserve a pat on the back for a job well done.

This is the myth being pedalled by Ursula ...

The vaccines are produced in the EU by private companies with contracts to honour. These vaccines are not produced by the EU, nor are they EU vaccines for the European Commission to dispense or distribute as it sees fit.

Instead of bad mouthing Astra Zeneca, and by implication, the UK (essentially the EU's complaint is that even though the UK invested upfront, provided expertise and planned early, while the EU did nothing but haggle on price and signed contracts late, AZ vaccines should be "shared fairly", thus disregarding contract rights and UK's efforts, foresight and investments), the EU should ask HMG for help via normal diplomatic channels. Berating someone you need help from publicly is not going to make them more predisposed to help you.

As for toilet rolls, it is EU member states who are stockpiling them. In any event, the analogy is flawed because you don't buy vaccines from supermarkets, and vaccines are not common everyday commodity items.

These days, I'm finding it's far more convivial to stay in the garage (maintenance sections) with a tinny. smile smile smile
