I’m far too technically lacking to be able to do this myself but has anyone ever tried to produce an “open gate” mod for the gearshift. A la Ferrari F355 ? Some form of open gate polished aluminium gate and bare shaft on the stick?

I did have a look at doing this. I've got the original rear gear lever position in my M3W and with the arrangement of the surprisingly thick lever and the short clearance down to the pivot point it was either going to be a seriously involved job or damn near impossible.

I looked at doing something similar but settled on a bare and elongated stick for the time being. To make the gated look work, you need to fasten the gate to the gearbox and not the gearbox cover as the gearbox moves a bit with engine torque. Making an alloy box with a gated top that fastens onto the shifter housing would be pretty straightforward. Note that the standard gearbox cover is some 2" above the gearstick pivot, so that would have an impact on the final effect.
