Interesting find Paul. I guess the pre-load on that tie rod should be minimal with car jacked up as the tension will increase as wheels take the cars weight. GoMog advice here which relates mainly to ensuring the tie rod is not too slack. Useful comment: No advantage is to be had by significantly increasing the tension.

When my S1 was t boned by a transit the crosshead pushed through the inner wing. The tie rods didn't fail and were reused.

Holy thread revival Batman!
I’d forgotten about this thread. An update might be in order for those who contributed 18 months ago.
Pre COVID I had got to the point of doing most of what I said I would, ie, new hard chrome king pins, new bushes (thanks Arwen, I haven’t forgotten), new damper blade assemblies and PTFE bushes along with AVOs front and rear. These resulted in massively improved ride and handling but with a little ‘striction’’ in the front uprights, as suggested as a potential downside above. The thinking was that getting a few miles under the tyres might ease things off. Then COVID struck and I did less than 200 miles all year.
A short time ago I managed to acquire a used but cared for front SSL kit (thanks Roger) at a very decent price which is sitting in my garage.
I intend to continue using the car as it currently is for at least 1000 miles then fit the SSL kit to see how it compares. I’m sure I can swap them over in a day so it will something to do on a miserable day in the summer!

I suspect the lock nut was over tightened leading to a stress point, try some liquid thread lock and just 'nip up' the nut

On the topic of front suspension, at some point I am going to install some bearings on the front suspension to assist with lightening the heavy steering. I can do basic mechanical jobs, and want to know how easy it is to do, and which bearings to go for. In terms of my ability, I would be able take things off and in, but things like reaming bushes is a no no. TIA

Leroy Removing the kingpins etc is stright forward. DaveW on this site has put in a first class directions of removing them. As for reaming out kingpins any of the Morgan dealers or your local classic car dealership/workshop can do that. Whatever you do remember safety first. I found myself reading the instructions over and over until i was happy.

Thanks for the advice. Having looked at Dave W method, gomog and morgan rebuild, I think it's a task within my capability. One question I still have is, do I actually need a spring compressor? The stripping of the suspension seems possible with long studding to replace the bolts holding the bottom plate on whilst releasing the tension in both springs (as per morgan rebuild). I assume I can just reassemble it in reverse and then tighten everything up with the long studs. Or, is this a case of reality being different to theory?
