The exhaust fumes always come in. One reason why I sold the P4SS. With the other Morgan you don't notice it because of the catalytic converter. But that doesn't change the airflow.

I‘ve got an enhanced flash from the factory early this year. This flash is for cars without any other modification.

Now, playing around there is also a bad smell like burnt plastic.

But it‘s only after a hard „pedal to the wood“ up to high revs, than shift the next gear and than usual lower cruising mode.
So with my wife next to me I stop such ideas in the future ;-)

Yesterday I used my OBD reader, which shows:
misfire cylinder 1
throttle position to high (maybe caused by the flash?)
problems with the turbo circle (??? a 2.0 GDI?)

Thanks for the interesting replies. I shall give it more time to burn off the coatings etc but the fact that changing to the lower exit pipe improved things, indicates to me at least, that it is an updraught issue. The fact that a few of you sorted your cars by fitting a side exit pipe is telling as well.
Side exit pipes are great on other people’s cars but when I’ve been in cars so equipped, they are noisy if you are on the wrong side. In a +4 I am.
As the cost of the side exit is not too much I might well give it a try.

Perhaps the rear mudflaps affect airflow around the tailpipe.

Good point that Dave, I remember back in the 80's a test that showed mudflaps fitted to some tin box of the era affected MPG slightly, caused by airflow disturbance

That is a very good point Dave. I can't find a good pic of your GDI but if the flaps are the same as your Roadster then they will be changing the air flow around the tail pipe.

Humm, more things to try.

That is really interesting. I shall have a look at that on my MG.
On the Mog Dave, is the air flow in your cabin area from the back?

I have noticed that my Morgans with spare wheel have less exhaust fumes in the interior than such Sport models or the P4SS. Maybe a good part is sucked into the spare wheel opening. One effective measure is to open the side windows. This will significantly reduce the negative pressure in the passenger compartment and less exhaust gases will be sucked in.

Another point, when the ECU is reprogrammed there are two areas. If the full load range got a smaller lambda, then the engine runs richer, you could smell it and it doesn't change. If the ECU has been changed in the part-load range, it may be that it learns and that the exhaust gases become less smelly after about 400 km. This was the case with my Elise after reprogramming.

I have often wondered if putting a solid slat on the luggage rack base would break up the airflow..?
But the mudflaps idea really intrigues me.
