I just want four wheels, an engine, brakes , body & steering wheel - a simple person wanting the simple life.
Me too, it's the raw experience that will elude the youngsters of the Playstation generation who want it all done for them. And something you can recognise under the bonnet ! Time marches on I suppose, some of these features modern cars have are pretty impressive. Some can parallel park for you ! Id argue that if you cant park a car properly then you shouldn't even be in one.

On my (all) Mercedes the emergency call button is right next to the reading light button above the mirror. You only reach for the reading light button when you can’t see what you are doing., which is when you can’t see which button you are pressing..........

Yup, I don't really consider these modern "click" cars driving other than a technological interest the final product has zero appeal to me. My SIL works in future product development for the blue oval and loves it all and we have interesting conversations, I have offered him to drive my Plus 8 but he turned it down, he knows what he likes. I do try the latest offering that he drives but it's like sitting in a remote controlled wheel chair - I'm not ready for that yet

Another Mercedes Recall arrived in the post today. It seems that the under bonnet fire suppression system may be wrongly connected. This fire suppression system is there to mitigate the risk of fire in a front end accident caused by highly flammable Air Con fluid!!!

Couldn't agree more however, only Morgan owners present and past, would have enjoyed our trip yesterday with biblical amounts of rain. The hood on the SS fought me all the way and as for the side curtains, well I just didn't bother however, what a brilliant drive. It reminded me of our trip to the Mille Miglia where it also usually rains. Good job the Morgan sheepskins are well dubbined!!
Here for a good time not a long time!! Reg

Got a letter today from Merc central to tell me that there was a recall on my new car for a software update on the emergency help system that I didnt know that I had. But, and this is the dodgy bit, the car will download and install this software update automatically and without any action on my part. My car could end up chatting to some bird in Dusseldorf . Could it suddenly start driving on the wrong side of the road? Might it be checking up on where I take it and reporting back to HQ? For that matter could it suddenly decide to head towards Poland? This level of efficiency is entirely alien to a British motorist. I shall buy a Jag next time round. P.S. Enjoy the avatar. Wont be there much longer. I have been daft and sold the boat Checking up on you? Not half. It logs how you drive, service aspects etc. All relayed through "head office". All info available should you have an accident, they can say how fast you were going, that you had ignored a brake warning light or whatever. A relative of mine bought a new Roller five years ago. Very excited he took it on the ferry to France. It wouldn't start on arrival so he faced the ignomy of being the only car unloaded. After much contact with the Paris agent, including having him head down in the passenger footwell searching for a special lever..., they loaned him a big Ford to carry on his visit. Eventually, a couple of weeks later, a chap from UK office flew out and worked out that it was my cousin's fault as he had failed to tell "head office" that he was taking it abroad so the computer had assumed it was being stolen! To be fair to them, they did pay for another holiday for him... Have you heard that the keycomputers work through head office now...not directly with the car. So if the head office computer goes down you can't open the car. Or, how about my client who ran out of electric in his electric Leaf a few metres from the charging point but the car freezes solid and can't be towed...long wait for special recovery truck to move it across carpark to charger. The simple life of waiting four hours for the AA because your points have burnt out and you'd put off buying a spare set are long gone! Nick

Yes these modern cars seem to know what the driver is doing before they do themself, won't be long before it calls for an ambulance before the accident actually happens!

And in 5 years time when it all goes pear shaped due to failure or corrosion the fun will start. I would really prefer a KISS car. Even my Mog is over complex.

I think "the program" should get with reality!
