Hi Everyone,

I have just sold my house in order to move nearer my daughter in Shropshire but unfortunately the property I was buying has gone “t’s” up on the survey report. But a rather nice barn conversation is now available in the area.

But……no garage.

It does have a two bay open fronted car port orientated southwards. Grade 2 listed so probably no chance of installing doors.

Does anyone have experience if this would be ok. Presumably covers would be required or…….will I have to sell my car.

I don't personally but I think Phil Royle keeps his outside under a cover as does TBM, they'll be along soon..

Not a clue ... where I live a car port would disappear to Norway in the first big blow 🙂 ..... but might you get away with good quality tarpaulins laced to the structure to make 'walls' ..... on the grounds that it's not a permanent change to the structure?? .... would keep a lot of the wind out and make life easier for your car covers. Would also depend on your tolerance for compromised aesthetics.

Yep, mine has been kept outdoors under a cover (no carport) for over 2 years now. No real issues to report - just get a decent cover with under car straps like this one Car Cover

I have a front wheel lock on, and a chain that goes round the rear bumper and through a wall anchor for security - but I do live in a fairly lively neighbourhood and the car is directly outside the front of the house by the pavement. I also have security cameras up. You can see the location here.

Probably better in a decent open barn than a closed in garage - allows air to circulate so you shouldn't get any problems from putting a damp car away

As has been noted a car port can off-set the usual condensation issues which rot cars from the inside out, and perhaps more so in my climate. I guess a car coon inside a garage may work well or an air conditioned garage in terms of preservation.

That garages are handy for so much of the "stuff" we all collect, it seems that a garage is a must wherever possible, I guess applying for planning for something that looks like an oak framed garage might be more acceptable than a possible threat to build a series of small sheds that are of dimensions not to require planning permission, and supposedly required to store all your stuff, which might ease acceptance to a garage build.. Something along those lines worked for me some years back.

Mine (4/4 sport) has lived outside on the drive for over ten years now under a variety of covers. Metex by Hamilton for eight years - they last about 2-3 years. And a Covercar one for the past two years. Both of these have non- scratch inner layer and are breathable. You can put them on a wet car but not a dirty one as the muck will then scratch - if in a hurry I just use a detailer spray to wipe off dirt on the points which touch the cover.

Just one thought, remembering many years ago my sister ordered an aluminium shed, I volunteered to lay a concrete base for it which I did. the shed was delivered and assembled on site by the company she bought it from, kids bikes and all sorts stored within until a few months later a gale blew up and the shed ended up sitting on top of the local HV transformer...

You guessed it, the thing had not been fixed to the base. and not having an inbuilt floor the weight if the bikes etc did not hold it in place.... So perhaps best to give fixing it to the deck a thought...?
