Agreed. My C class Merc was supposedly at the cutting edge with extras as an AMG spec C220 CDI. A few years later apart from leather "memory" seats my Polo has all the goodies but really a good radio & cruise control would be enough.

I would assume this is a good thing as it saves you a trip to the retailer and time waiting around for it to be fixed. I suspect you also have free navigation map updates that you are able to trigger, in case you didn't know.
I can not speak for all brands but `I know Audi, Porsche, Bentley and Mercedes off free built in SIM connectivity at no charge. Some are for 3 where others, like Audi, offer 3 years. Google Maps, live traffic, streaming, Google Search etc.
It's this connectivity that allows all the downloading and the emergency help. God willing you will never need it but a nice sense of security should you do. I believe your Merc also bundles in roadside and technical support. You should have two buttons, SOS and a wrench marked one. Best pull out the manual and have a read and more importantly enjoy the benefits of this all! I am a man. Reading the manual is entirely alien.

And here is another thought for you. We all know what happened when the UK government had to bow the knee to Apple and Google with the design of the Virus App. The tec companies were more powerful than HNG.
Just suppose that thanks to Brexit there is a row with Germany and the German government tells VW, Merc and BMW to disable all vehicles in the UK. Economic chaos!. Maybe not something to be taken as a serious prospect at the moment but in future?

I thought there had already been discussion to stop enforcement of the OBD2 compliance and allow individual manufacturers to use OE specific connections and software

And in 5 years time when it all goes pear shaped due to failure or corrosion the fun will start. I would really prefer a KISS car. Even my Mog is over complex. too late... I am doing the complex ones by now. So you will get complexity with the KISS car... Simple ones will turn up once the electrical TIER 1 systems will be ready. Could be a new start for Kit Cars and small series production.

Friends, all this complaining about modern stuff... i vivedly rember the endless “joy” of new elecronic problems wt my AR 164 wt the Busso V6. In those days I had numerous complaints wt the not listening dealer... the problems may shift but the stories remain the same.
On the positive, a number of driver assist systems, have made driving overall safer. Perhaps at the cost of driver enthusiasm in some cases. I
I both love my MB S as well as my Morgan, very different cars, but that makes them intersting.
I am worse than Howard, he is a man and does not read the manual, I do read the manual, but I forget... I guess that qualifies me as a man too?
