Hi Everyone @ TM,

Does anyone have any experience of sports cats failures on the later 3.7 Roadsters?

I just had the Roadster serviced at Revolutions in Perth - excellent, helpful and very friendly service by the way. I knew there was some leakage from the exhaust around the cat prior to taking it in but it appears that the cats / connections have failed now after only 5 years and 11k miles.

It appears that they will need replacing but is there anything that can be done to extend the life - either of the existing and/or the replacements? They are £600 to £700 each so a little pricy as a fairly regular service cost.

Hi "Changster",

i experienced failures of the flange gaskets (manifold-cat) regularly.

Until i changed from MMC items to more up-to-the-job (reinforced) gaskets. All ok since then (fingers crossed)

It doesn´t matter how fast it becomes, but how it becomes fast. laugh2

I had the gasket failure on one side after c 40k miles on my S1 Roadster. I think under £80 at my local garage.
On my 97 T16 +4 the flange weld failed but that can be easily rewelded.

Were sports CAT's for the 3.7 Roadsters ever a factory option? The only ones I'm aware of are the TUV approved, E marked 280 cell type available from Librand's and Berrybrook, to order and not cheap!

I had a discussion about the Sports Cats on 3.7 Roadsters with Morgan's Service Manager following the car's MoT test last year where the emissions were 'very marginal', shall we say. Initially he denied that Morgan fitted 'Sports' cats from new, and it wasn't until I sent him photos of the cats with 'Morgan Motor Company' and 'Roadster Sport' clearly stamped on them that he admitted they were indeed theirs and that they were fitted by the factory from new. On further enquiring he also told me the Sports cats were never type approved - which may explain their poor emission control, and possibly also their construction. He did offer me a 25% discount on replacement cats, but rather than accept his offer, I got rid of the car.

I suggested that the fitting of non type approved parts could be in breach of legislation, but since then he's remained very quiet...

It might be worth you having a word with Morgan to see if their discount offer still stands.

Thanks Sid. It did occur to me after previous post that the "Sports" CAT's may have been standard fit on ARV6's.

Thanks everyone for the, as ever, extremely useful and helpful comments. I am going to investigate further with Morgan and also look to understand whether we have a Cat failure, a gasket failure etc. It's purring along anyway at the moment and enjoying the sunshine that he Highlands are famous for!
