I've static balanced wire wheels and tyres since I started my apprenticeship for the West Coast Morgan dealer/distributor back in 1966.
No shake on my car up to 105mph (my 4/4). We used to static balance the wheels on one of the local F-Jr cars with no issues.
If a wheel was out of balance more than 3/4-1 oz., I'd deflate the tube and slide the tyre to a new position.
Just smooth cones for the wheels, nothing fancy. Nowadays it seems you can't balance a wheel/tyre without a great big fancy computerized high dollar/pound contraption.

I had MWS balance my SS wire wheels a couple of years ago and was pleased to find the drive vastly improved. Expensive and well over the cost originally quoted. However, there is a slight vibration recurring at motorway speed and I put it down to tyre wear. I am considering getting a woodturner to make me my own balance cones out of hardwood.

I am in the south east of France. The local guy who did the balancing does not have the cones so the rims were flat against the flange. Not how they sit on the car, and they wobbled horribly on the machine. Back on the car, they turn freely and without a wobble. I’m waiting for the smoothride cones and I’ll go back to the same place and start over. That way I can eliminate machine error. My car is currently bucking like a bronco from 30 mph up. Still hoping it’s just the weights. I will report back

I am considering getting a woodturner to make me my own balance cones out of hardwood. They are dead easy to make, I turned up a pair some years ago out of aluminium on Myford. Obviously no good for use in a commercial environment, but handy if you're chosen tyre place hasn't got a set.

Where did you go? I always use Thrupp Tyres and they've never had a problem balancing my wires.

Just another practical point: I have come across computerised balancing machines which will throw up an error when cones are used, as they want to feel the wheel hub firmly touching the machine’s backplate. Older machines are less fussy.

Older machines are less fussy. Good point. When I made mine I added a separate plastic disc to ensure a good spread of contact with the face of the balancer. It's never been needed though.

Graham, are the balancing weights on the outside rim or inside? I ask because I recently made the (fashion) decision to have my wheels rebalanced with the weights on the inside. I was told by the fitter that it would need "static" balancing as opposed to "dynamic" balancing, and that I would be back to have it switched back as its not as good. I do have vibration fro 68-75 mph, but its OK above this circa 85 cruise, and below. I went back and asked if they used the correct balancing cones, and they said they have them all and couldn't mount wires without them. I'm not sure what it all means, but I may try somewhere else, so will be very interested in your results. Where did you go? I always use Thrupp Tyres and they've never had a problem balancing my wires. Thanks Tim, they got the cones in from there other shop, and I'm pleased to say that the previous lot were way off the mark, and the wires are now balanced perfectly
