I’ve taken my wire wheels to be balanced and they were way out, up to 70 grammes per edge in and out with the old weights on. On the machine they were wobbling as if they were not on straight. Back on the car and the ride is just as bad as before. Should I buy a Smoothright Cone set at £100 for the once every five years I will need it and assume it’s that and go back to the same balance place, or dive straight in and find someone in the south east of France who can adjust wire wheels? They now have half a pound of lead on both faces.

1998 Plus 4.

I have already taken the steering damper blades off and replaced them with the bearing kit and fitted a hydraulic damper, much better but still not as good as I’ve driven.

Try and find a tyre fitter with the correct cones for the job, all old weights should be removed before placing on the machine. This would be my first move and if that doesn't work then explore deeper.

Thanks for the advice. I’ve ordered a set of Smoothride cones so I’ll wait until the wheels can be checked properly before going any further. Hopefully it’s just that.

Even a slightly buckled wheel will take an enormous number of weights to balance. The guy balancing should advise of runout though.

I've recently had good results with Dyna Beads, and it's all done in the comfort of your own garage without risking Tyre Monkey damage

Graham, it would help if you added your approximate location to your personal profile.
That way, people reading your queries might be able to suggest a suitable place for tyres/servicing/&c in your locality smile

Graham, are the balancing weights on the outside rim or inside? I ask because I recently made the (fashion) decision to have my wheels rebalanced with the weights on the inside. I was told by the fitter that it would need "static" balancing as opposed to "dynamic" balancing, and that I would be back to have it switched back as its not as good. I do have vibration fro 68-75 mph, but its OK above this circa 85 cruise, and below. I went back and asked if they used the correct balancing cones, and they said they have them all and couldn't mount wires without them. I'm not sure what it all means, but I may try somewhere else, so will be very interested in your results.

Where did you go? I always use Thrupp Tyres and they've never had a problem balancing my wires.

The garage I use (non Morgan) for MOT's and brake fluid changes have balanced my Morgan Lightweight Alloys which are Centre Locks with their own cones to good effect and keeping the weights inside and out of sight.

They are a small independent but proper engineers use to working on Classics and still in touch with the real world with regard to costs per hour, they have taken care of my other Morgan's and Fiesta for jobs requiring a lift.

Herself uses a VW indie for the GTI that we have been with for 30 years and many VW's in that time throughout the family... .
