Being fortunate to now be the current caretaker of the '32 Super Sports Lance mentioned, I've somewhat sorted starting the thing. Simple really - it does have an electric start, so employed that given my knowledge of retard settings is limited and I value my wrist. Success! Fired up instantly and settled down to a nice idle once the air was set back. Similar to starting my '59 BSA actually.
