Some Fairmiles went on the St Nazaire raid. I didn't realise the significance of HMS Campbeltown until I read the mission history. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St_Nazaire_RaidOther naval units involved were two Hunt-class destroyers, HMS Tynedale and Atherstone, which would accompany the force to and from the French coast and remain out at sea during the raid.[12] A motor gun boat (the Fairmile C type MGB 314) was the headquarters ship for the raid, with Commander Ryder and the commanding officer of the commandos on board.

She was in the Dart last year in grey as picure top left.A bit more.She is in Pompie now as a permanent place in Naval history. They were like a No9 buses when we moved here 42 years ago, always up and down from Dartmouth to Totnes and across to Torbay but no longer. She did well to make it across from Pompei and return last year. There was the Torquay, Paignton , Brixham ferry when I was a kid but I thin kthat was a bigger MTB

Ferry timesThe Western Lady that they use for this service used to be one of the Dartmouth to Kingswear foot passenger boats that our three youngsters caught twice a day enroute to the Banjo and coach journey to Churston Grammar.

The current boats which ply the Torquay to Brixham route are steel hulled, and not a patch on the Fairmiles.
We used to sit in front of the wheelhouse, and sometimes just went there and back without disembarking. The wooden hulls were shaped for speed, but obviously the Perkins Diesels didn't give that, although they went along at a fair pace, with a most pleasant motion in the water.
The current boats are not in the same league, sadly, and there's no incentive to make that trip now. I first did that trip in 1961, when they were painted a pale yellow and white.
Soon after they were painted bright blue with red funnels.

By heck yow were only a little tacker back then and whippets were free wi petrol..
My first trip at 18 was in 1969 on a training course at the company training college (prior to a Canadian contract) at Brixham on a Saturday early evening we caught it across to Torquay for a night clubbing and we were all pissed as farts when we set out, a good time was had by all and I can't remember the taxi home but the landlady wasn't too happy that morning when I rolled in about six in the morning, happy days..
