I like gears so much I'm having an extra one fitted I imagine its my biking heritage that has driven my love of using gears to keep an engine 'on song'. I can understand that, the 4 speed on my Kent 4/4 wasn't the best for motorway work and long distance touring.

I’ve driven well over a thousand miles this week for nothing but pleasure, in a car which is useless for anything else. I think you can rest easy. 1,000 miles at 40mpg means you produced 276Kg of CO2. That's about a half of Boris Johnson used when he took a private jet (A321) from London down to Cornwall. (based on a average of 250Kg/hour for jet transport). I bet you also did a great deal in your week's holiday to assist the UK economy.

Even with my 5-speed box Motorways can be a bit tiring, 70 mph equates to just over 3000rpm. but if you chill and drop the cruise to 65mph it's fine.

Yep, on mine, using GPS speed and tacho, I'm currently hitting about 3100rpm at 60mph. The 0.82 five gear ratio should drop that to about 2500rpm making it a lot more comfortable.

Are we comparing like with like, how much CO2 per person travelled (to use your illustration) how many people travelled in the Morgan, compared with how many people who travelled in the aircraft, the CO2 per passenger may be much lower in the private jet. That is without dealing with inherent security issues etc which may dictate method of transport and total CO2 involved

Well this thread puts me in a bad place I am not going to even try and defend the totally daft waste that these cars represent. The massive complexity and long term running costs make you think twice when your computer controlled suspension fails and makes it float like an 80's Cadilaxitive with no shockers. Then asks for £3k to fix it! Thank heavens for MB warranties. I think that will be lovely when it is two+ years old, falls off it's PCP (or the way-to-rich owner gets bored of his new toy or sees another one coming the other way) and it is less than half's its price. I will keep my eyes open having had a good line of plummeting AMG's CL600 (£120k new and I bought it almost three years old for £40k) with it's daft 5.5 biturbo V12. The current ML63pp which was £110k new and £38k to me with 12k miles two and a half years old. An E63s estate which was the perfect sleeper as it looked like every Taxi in the area. They can never match the enjoyment of the Coupe or S2 but for a daily rumble they are great. The hybred thing is a knee jerk due to global emmissions targets, corporate guilt and because they can give it 800+bhp in the german arms race to 1000hp. Oh and Tesla with their Max Plad moments. I spoke to a friend who likes to do the same with sports cars. Aston V8, Maserati, Jag F-V8 and several others all bought cheap and run for 12 months to have fun. He bought an early AMG GT coupe last year and is keeping it for another year. His comment was "this things is nuts. It makes you laugh every time you get a chance to give it a squirt. The noise is hooligan and it is built out of granite." As pointed out above the little 660 3 pot Caterham is more valid for the future but I love AMG products for no nonsense ground coverage. Once depreciated. Rest easy Alistair, it's the ball not the player this thread is all about Besides what a dilligent citizen you are paying tax on at least 28 cylinders that we know about Yours, keeping the V8 spirit alive in Devon until the last second

My helicopter was out of the question too, it’s got a cracked chassis and a funny noise coming from the drive coupling.

A good friend of mine ( and also a petrol head ) has just bought himself a final indulgence in the form of a Bentley Arnarge. It is a beautiful car loaded with every extra you could image and some you perhaps couldn't, cut glass decanter and glasses anyone, anyway it has only done 20,000 odd miles and when it was new it cost £195K and he got it for £26K. Who wouldn't be temted if only for a year.
Here for a good time not a long time!! Reg

Its a absolute nuisance when things don't go to plan, the little things like lack of runway and helicopter out of action spoil some of our fun!

Interesting article here on jet travel efficiencyOf course, in BJ's case he can hardly claim it was a smalll fuel-efficient jet anyway. He used a full-sized Airbus A321. I don't know how many passengers he had with him or the size of the security detail, but you can bet the A321 180-odd seating capacity wasn't fully utilised. Whichever way you look at it, I hardly think Ewn's tour to the Orkneys would come anywhere near the amount of environmental damage caused by politicians swanning around in jets to climate conferences.
