Morgan Plus 4 SuperSports track use at Spa

Today was the first track day with my new Plus 4 SuperSports at Spa Francorchamps. The car is tremendously quick on the track. The air cooled standard 911`s, the Boxters and the Elise are no problem. If you drive hard you can even match the Exige. I didn`t expect that. It was really great fun. There were no problems with the brakes, the hotter they are the better is the break performance. The balance of the car is just perfect. There is no problem if you break to late. The car is really forgiving and you can`t make any mistakes. Very easy to drive. The engine is superb as well. It revs and revs and runs on the track as well as in normal use. I am very happy that I have chosen the short (4.1) rear axle. I think that makes the car much more agile. Eau rouge you can go without lifting in fourth gear.

Guenter, I'm really jealous! Sounds like an amazing day. thumbs

Thanks for the write-up; interesting to hear your opinion of the Plus 4 SS during track use.

Without trying to open a can of worms, how did it compare to your GTN?

Dear "Goodwood Drifter",
I also believe that a 260 hp Exige must be quicker especially on a fast track like Spa. But there where 3 Exiges at that track day (may be lower powerd ones) that I cood hold with my Plus 4 SS. May be the reason is that I was alone in my car and the Exiges where driven with driver and co driver.

Dear Simon,

it was really an amazing day. To your question:
The Aero 8 GTN is a lot more difficult to drive because of its tremendous power. A little bit to much throttle accelerating out of a corner and you loose immediately the back, although the new limited diff. works perfect. This happens even in 4. and 5. gear; (because of the short axle fitted in my car) so you have to be all the time highly concentrated and very careful. But once if you have got used to it, you play in a completely different league (GT3 with track tires). I didn`t drive the GTN at Spa yet. I think eau rouge will be a big challenge because you are a lot faster at the straight before you turn in.

The Plus 4SS is so much easier to drive because the whole package is in harmony. Once in the drift you can almost do everything with the car, lift or give full throttle, the car stays neutral. The GTN too is forgiving in the drift while you lift the throttle, but when you accelerate..... !!!!!!

Kind regards
Günter

Hi Guenter,

Thank you for taking the time to write your comparison; your experience is as I would have expected. Whilst I have never driven a GTN on track, I have experienced my previous Aero 8 and the Aeromax. Both could be a handful if you didn't respect the power and apply it at the correct time. Huge amounts of fun but equally, a car you could get into trouble with quite quickly.

I'm looking forward to tracking the SS because it feels like it would be a lot more forgiving and allow you to take liberties that the V8 Aeros would not.

1560 (Steven) has tried to get us to Spa in previous years, it would be nice to think we could all meet up there in the future. It would be great to follow someone who knows the track and learn from them; I'm sure the track side conversation would be as enjoyable as the track time. thumbs

Best regards

Simon

Hi Simon,
please give me a sign when you will be there.
It will be a pleasure meeting you and Steven. When you look at the website of spa you will find the dates for the track days.
Hope seeing you soon in 2012.
Best regards
Günter

Wow, taking Eau Rouge in a Morgan! I once visited the Spa circuit and was surprised to see how steep that corner is - it looks flat on the telly.

And some of us actually turned up and drove it grin2

Never did have the balls to take Eau Rouge flat out in the Aero but I'm 100% sure it would have taken it in it's stride without problem. In the end, I always just lifted a tad frown

As for your other comments on respecting the Aero in the corners or it bites, Steven?? laugh2

Cheers
