More than likely, have been a Country Member of the Scarlets for some years, will be good to go and watch some games in Llanelli and not just their away games if they come to Northampton or Leicester.

I used to fish several rivers here. Mainly Tywi, Cothi, Teifi, Gwendraeth.
Mainly for Sewin ( Sea Trout) but also salmon and trout.
I am tempted to go back but reports indicate significant reduction in fish stocks. Even on quiet nights ( fishing at night for sewin) then being out spotting wildlife was compensation for no fish.
We have a monthly noggin just West of Llandeilo so you can come along.

Hi SS,

Hope the house purchase goes ok and seems you have some ready made new friends in the area. I’m rather envious!
If your into salmon and you haven’t already done so…have a look at the Wye Salmon Association website.

Sospan, your right about fish stocks and it can be depressing not seeing a fish never mind catching one. But your right, glimpsing wildlife makes it worthwhile. Then you get the absurd ……being chased down the river bank by a doey eyed but really upset cow!

I have been charged by a bullock. Was daytime fishing opposite the Halfway Inn ( was our noggin venue) on the Tywi. Nosey heifers in one field, bullocks in the next field. The riverbank was about 10’ below field level. The alpha bullock came over, huffed, snorted, moved down the slope. I just shouted, waved my arms. He stopped, turned, paraded round and left having shown off to the others.
It was fabulous night fishing for Sewin. Your senses enhanced due to darkness, sounds of nocturnal wildlife.

Marchand Petit have a 278 metre stretch of the Dart at Staverton complete with fisherman's hut up for auction with a guide of £85,000. License to fish Salmon and Sea Trout by separate negotiation. This could well be a good longer term investment for someone interested in dangling the maggot..
It looks nice and pretty level.

Hi Richard,

I got rather excited until I read "longer term investment". Damn, the years are rolling by!

And, I wouldn't even get to fish......no sporting rights.

And, wife said I'd have to sell my car to raise some cash.

A real lose, lose, lose situation

But thanks for drawing attention to it.

Hi Geof,

I have never seen an advert like this before so I thought it must be quite a rare occurrence and that one of you lads might be interested, I just assumed the fishing rights would be a separately negotiated affair, but it's not a world I have any knowledge of.

I once spent some time with a colleague fly fishing for trout in Donegal which was fun, he taught me everything he knew and I did manage to catch a few for supper.

Fishing rights are often separate to land ownership. The clubs I was a member of had two options. Rent the fishing from whoever owned the right to fish or buy it outright. We had a mix of both. One club’s aim was to buy the rights to the better stretches and rent the rest. The rental amount was kept secret as other parties would offer more...gazumping in effect.
One farmer was a bit disgruntled about missing out on the value of the fishing rights on the river through his land. Access was by prescribed routes and we had stiles to cross fences etc. There was a threat of legal action when he cut them down and threatened a couple of anglers. It is a bit like public rights of way.

I had guessed the fishing rights would be a separate issue, but reading your account full of bad feeling it would certainly negate any marginal benefit from the relaxation on the river bank for me, it's money and greed again getting in the way.
Interesting to read how it works in Wales though, when garages go for 50k down here it seemed a bit of a bargain for a nice shed and a chunk of the Dart riverbank.

Back on topic it is refreshing to see Otters, Heron and Egrets on the Dart which is a sure sign of good water quality I imagine, these we have seen around the Higher Ferry slip at pre dusk time although the egrets anytime of day.
