They are one of those things that you will only need if you have left it at home.

Just once on the old 4/4 many years ago, the main problem was we were on a very twisty fast country road, so Mrs M was sent off in a hi-vis to stand at the previous corner, then I found out how soft the edge of the road was whilst trying to get a good jacking point

In France in 2006 we had two punctures in the space of 24 hours. The first was on a Friday afternoon and we happened to be just a couple of hundred metres from a tyre place that had a spare tube in stock, which they fitted to our tyre and off went. The second was out in the wilds on the Saturday and so we used the spare. We happened across another tyre place later in the day and although they didn't have a spare inner tube they did give us a handful of tyre valves just in case.

Based on my experience that weekend, French tyre service technicians are a great bunch, they couldn't have been more friendly or helpful, and despite my frankly desperate attempts to pronouns 'pneu' correctly they didn't even snigger, though it would have been entirely understandable if they had

Two times in the last 5 years..

First time on a trip to the river Elbe. My car is a 2005/ 2006 model so tube type rims. I called the automobil club to change the wheels.

Second time 30 minutes after leaving the garage wich changed all 4 contis with ttrack´s and -of course- new tubes.

And of course it happens on a sunday 10 Minutes after the garage closed for weekend

As Paul wrote: Spare wheel = essential item especially for tube rims!

I have also had to replace one on the current car, but that was actually at home.

I have a 'space saver' spare on mine. Technically it's a standard 4/4 wheel, but looks tiny compared to the wheels/tyres I've got on. Unfortunately couldn't fit anything larger in the gap at the back.

I've had to use the Morgan spare wheel twice in 27 years of Mogging. Both times were on local journeys, but one was on the way to work! 😭

I worked in aviation for 40 years and we joked about what the most USELESS things in the world might be:

- Runway behind you
- Sky above you
- Fuel in the bowser
- ........complimentary letters from the company!!!

All admittedly only applicable when the s..t hits the fan.

In motoring terms maybe - the spare wheel in your garage might compare.

(never used a can of goo but would hate to have to try it for the first time on that dark, wet, busy bend when you get the flat Give me the spare wheel any time)
