I had a flat on the way to the pub way back in the seventies.
Midget, wires, sidejack, good spare.
It literally took minutes to change the wheel.
But it was daylight, dry, and a quiet road.
With goo it's probably 50/50, but a lot quicker than a wheel change.

I only carry the spare once a year when travelling down the motorway to Williams for the service. I've changed the wheel at the roadside twice in all my MOG years. I wouldn't go anywhere without a spare. I had a puncture in my MGBGT V8 years ago and used the goo. Utterley hopeless. And it ruined the tyre; no-one would repair it as they couldn't guarantee removing all the useless goo. In the end I made such a fuss to the goo manufacturer that they paid for a new tyre for me.
My little Abarth came with goo and no spare so I bought a spare and it's in the boot..in the space where the spare used to be fitted!
Re spacesavers.....many (MANY) years ago I was in a Porsche 928 and we had a puncture. On went the spacesaver, no probs. What to do with the enormous punctured wheel though? No way would it fit in the car. In the end we hid it in a hedge nearby and went back for it later in a Volvo estate. Different days....

I deal with many cars that have punctures on fast roads i.e. 70 mph. By the time they stop the tyre is shredded and no amount of goo will fix that ! I wouldn't go anywhere without the spare on my +4 and my Fiesta ST came with goo, first thing I did was buy a spacesaver and jack on fleabay about £50 money well spent.

I`ve got both the Mog and the Fiesta with AutoSeal in the tyres - it`s water based so does not mess up the tyre when changed and will permanently seal a puncture on the tread area up to 1 cm. Doesn`t seem to alter the handling. It seals the puncture with Kevlar or similar fibres. Google them for info. If you are MSCC member you get discount.

Several years ago, we set out on a bright sunny day heading for the Derbyshire peaks planning on finding an idyllic pub for a celebratory lunch. It was our wedding anniversary.
We had been cruising along the A50 (dual carriageway, 70 mph speed limit) for around 10 miles when it happened. The near side rear tyre had deflated. Fortunately, I was able to get the car on to a slip road where there was less traffic and what there was had slowed down a little. A few minutes with jack and tools and we were on our way again having fitted the spare.
Somehow, the shine had gone out of the day by then so we headed for the closest pub. We didn’t make the peaks that day but at least we stayed in control of our day and didn’t end up waiting for a recovery service.
Spare wheel = essential item. Oddly we’d been to the peaks when our flat happened although we were nearly home by the time I had to stop

(But that’s me...I have never been attracted to used cars with tyres plastered in shiny tyre paint; it reeks a bit of Arthur Daly trying to make them look better than they really are.)

I do use tyre dressing - sparingly - and preferably satin wipe-on-with-a-cloth rather than gloss spray.
BUT - and surely we've all experienced this ? - walk too close past one (especially at the front, if they're not parked completely straight) and you'll get your jeans (or socks if you are in your plus fours) besmirched.
