Slight Drift Warning....

I have recently changed to buying Esso Premium unleaded. Why? The pump is labelled E5, BUT according to the ESSO web site:

"Although our pumps have E5 labels on them, our Synergy Supreme+ 99 is actually ethanol free (except, due to technical supply reasons, in Devon, Cornwall, North Wales, North England and Scotland). Legislation requires us to place these E5 labels on pumps that dispense unleaded petrol with ‘up to 5% ethanol’, including those that contain no ethanol, which is why we display them on our Synergy Supreme+ 99 pumps."

I have noticed an improvement in MPG, by about 10%. The cars seem to be running better, too. I know Morgan cars do not need 99 Octane fuel, but if there is an ESSO station near you it may be worth a try.

I recorded this a while ago Peter when I had to use BP. The pump said E10, but the mpg was significantly better. Since then I've used BP E5 and Esso E5 with the same result. I normally use Shell E5.

I have long used Esso for the same reasons. Also at my local Esso, I can trade 300 Nectar points for 5p/litre money off, which is profitable as long as I buy over 30 litres.

That’s good news. I have often wondered though just how accurate mpg meters might be. First, there is the issue of accurately measuring the volume of fuel used. Secondly, everything naturally has an error margin, but it is much in the vehicle manufacturers’ interest to aim for errors on the plus side only! Maybe I am too sceptical.

I have tried a couple of different ways.

1. Brim to brim on filling as well with note of mileage.
2. mpg thingy on MB dash read out.
3. iPhone app speaking to ELM toggle thing attached to OBDII port

The differences were around 10-15% so I did a couple of journeys using all of them.

This was on the ML63 with a V8 lump with a severe petrol problem, changes are easy to spot on lower numbers

Brim-Brim 20.4mpg
The car's own MPG display 19.7mpg
OBDII 20.2mpg

I guess the Brim figure can change with heat, nozzle etc. I was surprised the car gave a lower figure than the OBD given they must be using the same data? Maybe they don't want mileagegate?
I am guessing that they use the engine management computer to follow the petrol injection information? So if the tyres are wrong or inflation out it could make a difference.

Either way I need to get less well acquainted with the loud pedal.
