(BHM) is recognising that alongside the history that has been taught traditionally for centuries, there is another historical timeline running alongside that has been hidden and should be celebrated as well.

I think I mean that if we accept that our history lessons/education was loaded by a specific bias, why would we think that teaching the new young through the prism of a different bias is better.
We don't have access to our own inner history with any accuracy. Wouldn't it be more honest to lay in front of students that "history" is the past viewed from today's perspective. Lay all the perspectives in front of them so they realise it's such a complex thing that we can actually have knowledge of almost nothing. Being so muddy of course goes against the very thrust of education which is to build up the belief in people that they have knowledge when in fact they have opinions (mostly others'opinions). So to educate to the point of self recognition of ignorance would be a real revolution. But if achieved it would surely shift the focus to how society believes it should behave now, rather than endless varying reruns of the past.
Our education system does for everyone what Freudian analysis does for individuals...Locks people into endless analysis rather than action in the moment.

Yes the difference in the target audience is probably around 55 years of real life history not theoretical

Several of us have worked overseas in African countries and watched it first hand in action .

We're currently learning about Walter Tull in Year 8 and Robert F Williams in Year 9. Not entirely sure what relevance that has to working in Africa?

I think some may be so blinkered by their own prejudices that they miss the point of BHM entirely. There is no erasing of history, there is no changing of narrative, there is no exclusion of traditional taught UK history. It is just increasing our understanding of the world around us, and our shared history Over 65% of my school are of Black African or Caribbean descent (although most are now third generation British) so it is of more relavance to them than the Battle of Hastings or the English Civil War. Although we are still teaching that alongside a plethora of other British and World History topics. And yes, we do teach about the Barbary Pirates (and others) when we cover Slavery.

We also have a Womens History Month in March. I wonder if there's the same objection to that?

(Oh, and Black History Month is not Black Lives Matter. Two very different things)

ALL Lives matter... no reason to pick out any particular group for special attention, indeed to do so is, in my opinion, a form of positive discrimination: this is as odious, as negative discrimination.

Back on thread - any education in this area is a very positive move for a better forward thinking cohesive future.
