A while ago I splashed out on a laser engraver. Id had a mechanical one for ages but buying this is a game changer ! The detail and size I can get to is incredible, I can get text at smaller than 0.5 mm !!

Here is a quick run through of a mog plaque I just made and some sample images :-)

So setting up is a matter of making the design and setting the power parameters. These change depending on what you're trying to achieve.

The engraving can take a couple of hours with multiple passes before we get to a decent depth for the paint to sit in. Then its just a matter of cutting out, painting and sanding back. A quick blast with some lacquer seals the job.

Ive done a few jobs for people so far from cutting out watch hands in brass ! and making some plaques for a narrow boat owners engine room.

Great results Bonesie ..... I've been working towards a more 'appropriate' chassis plate for my rebuild .... the mid-70's tacky piece of plastic coated alloy with the info screen printed on just seems not in the spirit of the car .... my plan is to ferric chloride etch a brass plate along the lines of an old steam era plate with raised letters and 'boxes' for stamping the chassis number etc and a painted background .... much more satisfying .... having embraced 3D printing through this forum this may be another thing to think about ... though I guess it would not be as cheap!! 🙂.... nice work!

Yes, very similar ... but with boxes for capacity and year .... I've sized mine to pick up on a couple of existing holes on the top of the underbonnet tool box ... yours looks really good .... though I think the single S is a historic typo on the Morgan plate ... would be interesting to have a poll for the spelling to see how long it took them to notice (and get round to rectifying 🙂)

That looks a cracking machine .... and very useful for someone like you who does nifty bits of class engineering .... unlike the 3D printer I doubt my useage would justify one .... better spending the money on another hammer 😁

Looks like MMC mis-spelling, definitely chassis.

Very impressive results Bonesie thumbs Aren't your examples releaving rather than engraving though or maybe laser etching [Linked Image]

Presumably you could engrave as well?

Great work again Bonesie,

There is a small company in our City that still does traditional acid etched data plates & signs, but they can't find any young'uns to train & it's a dying art
