I think somebody cut one up, and the part which takes the brake pressure had distorted, and broken the electrical connection.
A relay will help the current problem but a microswitch on the pedal is an easy fix.

Part of the problem is the poor quality of OE replacements, that's why +8 Richard's originals are still working That is making the assumption that it wasn't replaced before I took custody of her 7 years ago Jon, as such it is an unknown but possible  .

My brake lights stay on intermittently, I give the switch a gentle tap then light goes out.
Does anyone have a part # please?
I believe these switches aren’t very reliable, as an alternative has anyone tried mounting a micro switch off the brake pedal? Here is the part you requested Dave. Slaving a relay will remove the current factor from the hydraulic switch as John suggests, this makes them far less prone to failure. I have never had a failure on either of my Plus 8's in about 50,000mls and 11 years to put things in perspective for you. I would recommend avoiding adding the complexity of a relay to this safety critical circuit which will increase potential for unreliability. As John V6 suggests his failed even with low current LED brake lights so better to source a quality replacement switch.

With headlamp controls I would agree to save dipswitch contacts although less relevant to LED ones with their much reduced current draw. I can't recall any manufacturer that uses a relay in the brake switch circuit though and again LED conversions reduce contact burning issues to near zero. With electrics and maybe plumbing the KISS principle when possible seems to offer best reliability.

I found Intermotor brand to be ok, beware of modern Lucas stuff in white & green boxes, a considerable amount is very poor ROC copies

I am resurrecting this thread because next week my car goes in for its MOT and I have just discovered that none of my three brake lights are working so I am assuming its the brake pressure switch. In quote Rich has quoted the replacement part for 1975 to 2005. My car is a Plus 4 first registered in Sept 2006. Anybody know the correct part number for 2006 on?

To test if it is the switch remove the leads and then connect a wire across the leads. With the ignition on the brake lights should be on.
I would expect your switch to be as the 2004 car.
You can if you are quick remove and replace the switch without needing to bleed the brakes.
