Graham

By the look of the redline on the rev counter I would hazard a guess that the original Standard Vanguard engine has been replaced by a TR2? Is this correct?

Edit : Sorry hadn't seen the pictures of the engine bay , this is indeed a Vanguard unit : Edit

The overheating problems are soluble , but are probably going to take time and patience to sort out.

Firstly , and this is the easy one , that large fan belt is very prone to slippage, make sure the tension is right and that it is in good shape. Sometimes one of the dynamo bolts comes adrift and this does not allow the correct tensioning of the belt, so check the two bottom ones (the top is visible)

Secondly just check for small leaks around all the hoses.

Now I would check ignition timing and mixture to ensure that these are not contributory factors.

For a car that has been used very little there is almost certainly going to be a build up of sludge in the coolant, both in the radiator and in the engine block . Both can be removed by flushing through , if you are lucky , or if that fails a reverse flush. I have even seen water pumps bunged up with sludge , which certainly doesn't help;p with efficiency

Now if you are still getting a problem then I would suspect a head gasket (reasonably easy) , or failing that the figure of 8 gaskets at the bottom of the wet liners (much more difficult and time consuming.

Good luck and keep us posted on your progress.

Welcome,
The car looks great and will get better with use. Membership of the Morgan Sports Car Club is a useful thing to belong to as it will also put you in touch with your local centre. Details on website.
