I always assumed that it was related to the coat of arms of the O'Conor dynasty.

Apparently it's simply a portmanteau of Continental Auto's, the name of a business in Surrey that looked after European sports cars of the era and in whose garage the first Connaughts were built.

Why do this „Supercars“ all look the same? (X20 Supercar).

In basic outline all fish look much the same as do most birds. To build a supercar your basics are a mid engine for weight distribution and a strealined shape for low drag and high downforce. Thats why the McLaren, the Ferrari, the Lotus recently announced all look very similar indeed.

The Connaught name belongs to a company called British Vintage Brands based in Swaffham, along with Sopwith (biplanes and now 3-wheelers), Villiers (two-stroke engines) and Levis (motorcycles).

As I mentioned in the Sopwith flies again thread, the company exhibited at the Goodwood Revival this year. They had some interesting products, including a supercar under yet another brand "Trident".
