Hi all just ordered a set of mirrors (2 door and windscreen) from Libranbs paid £15 pounds for tracked Royal Mail to Australia I then ordered a set of leather bonnet corner protectors from Melvin Rutters and paid £28 for tracked Royal Mail to Australia has anybody else had the same illogical discrepancy’s between parts suppliers.I have only ordered from Melvin Rutters previously and just paid the figure asked for delivery, is there usually so much difference.

I send stuff abroad all the time. Small packages usually.
I could get 4 corner protectors to you for around £11 and that using Royal Mail tracked and signed for. That price would compensate against loss up to 50 GBP

Having been in the international mail order parts business I suspect small suppliers such as these dealer sources don't have the turnover to cut a deal with the bulk carrier services so tend to rely on our traditional mail services. Furthermore to cover admin costs on smaller orders they likely have a fixed lower shipping cost threshold (as we did) which may seem excessive to the buyer wanting a couple of small low price items.

“P&P” postage and PACKING...the latter being a very convenient way of boosting profits ?

Or as I suggested Doug covering fixed costs whilst encouraging larger orders for the same shipping cost. In our case we had a daily Parcelforce contract collection around 3.30pm with a fixed lower weight carriage threshold which we were obliged to pass onto customer. We occasionally got grumbled at but received many more compliments of small orders received at 3pm and being on the customers doorstep the following morning. Sadly over 25 years down the line and now being the recipient of such services I'm amazed how a small part can take a whole week to arrive. Still happy to keep the niche suppliers in business though.

I only ever charge the actual cost. As a small business I just couldn't bring myself to over charge people for postage. Ive even part refunded postage after initially over charging !
Richard, when I see over priced postage I just go elsewhere. Im not sure its ever encouraged me to fill a basket. I will pay over priced postage only if its something I really need or want and cant get elsewhere

Horses for courses. We all do thing differently and in the end its the punters choice where to spend their cash.



EDIT: to be fair, most of the stuff I post is all the same size package ( and roughly the same weight ) so its easy for me to have fixed prices on the majority of my post out. I can see it getting tricky when different weights, sizes and product values come into it.

Good to be enlightened as I was not fully aware of how carrier contracts played a part.
But my comment was prompted more by the original posting from CPN. I am guessing that Rutters would be doing more mail order than Librands...so I am searching for an explanation in my mind, just as CPN is.
