The fly in the ointment as ever is this:

"Relatively affordable EVs at around the £35,000 mark"

Where we live, very few people have the means to consider a "relatively affordable £35k". This is typical Autocar Cityboy thinking.

And finance with growing inflation, job insecurities and so on isn't likely to change this anytime soon. So the e-vision will face a cost ceiling, which only time will show what the eventual numbers will be.

Absolutely. Apart from the Mog, in the last 10 years I've bought three cars, £500 (Fiesta), £1800 (Hyundai Coupe) and £900. (Corsa). My Mrs has bought two in the same period £2000 (Astra Diesel) and £4000 (Hyundai i30 Diesel) - she was doing about 25K miles a year before WFH and tends to get 200K out of a car before she gets rid. Reckon I'll get another year out of the Corsa, and the Mrs is doing less than 100m a week now so will get another couple of years out the Hyundai (it's on 180,000m)

So, five cars in 10 years, total cost £9.200, so a little short of the quoted 'affordable' £35,000 mark over in cloud cuckoo land

Yes, they do seem to be a bit off the mark there, there are affordable EVs for much less. My Mini was £28k, and the Level1 trim version is £26k I believe. Corsa-e has just had a £3k price cut bringing it down to £25k. If they decide to bring the Dacia Spring to the UK it should be well under £15k.

But yes, it's going to be a long time before the less well-off can afford to buy new EVs - OTOH they can't afford new ICE cars either, so is it a fair comparison? Even used EVs aren't cheap yet though - the lowest price on Autotrader is around £6k for a ten year old Nissan Leaf. They are holding their value incredibly well at the moment, but that's probably a demand indicator more than anything.

What does this mean? Well, mainly that the migration to EVs isn't going to happen overnight, it'll probably be 10 or 15 years before EVs are in the majority, and probably 25 years before ICE cars are a rare sight. So the National Grid has got plenty of time to do whatever network upgrades are required, and for providers like Gridserve and Ionity to install the necessary charging points.

And a 10 yr old Leaf has a winter range of about 45miles, so pretty useless......

Not for most people. For pretty much the entirety of my working career I had a daily car commute of 35 miles or less. When I was schlepping up and down to London it was much less as I only had to get to the station. The national average is 20 miles a day.

Sure, there are always going to be travelling salesmen and the like who are going to need long ranges, but they'll probably be able to run something with a longer range on a PCP or whatever.
