Not for most people. For pretty much the entirety of my working career I had a daily car commute of 35 miles or less. When I was schlepping up and down to London it was much less as I only had to get to the station. The national average is 20 miles a day.
Sure, there are always going to be travelling salesmen and the like who are going to need long ranges, but they'll probably be able to run something with a longer range on a PCP or whatever.
I suppose so, we may be unusual in that I do a 50 mile daily commute (no chargers at work) and my Mrs does 80 miles (no chargers at work) when not WFH. We went to see her Aunty/Uncle on Sunday. - 70mile there, 70mile back - we were there for about 5hrs. Off to the Zoo tomorrow - 60mile round trip. Worcester to see the folks next Sunday - 90mile trip (although probably stay overnight, Covid permitting) A 45mile range would make things really difficult, or take hours longer. I could live with a 150-200mile range. Inconvenient, but liveable. Anything sub 100 would be very frustrating. I used to have Land Rover on lpg. Had a range of around 180miles - I found the search for LPG fill ups when touring the country equally frustrating.

We get 260 to 280 miles from the Model 3, more than enough. SuperChargers are there for the very occasional long trip.
The Morgan is there for the fun trip, short or long.

The Morgan is there for the fun trip, short or long. Yep, if I could afford a Tesla, I'd have one at a drop of a hat. Range and infrastructure are excellent. Sadly, never going to happen.

Bit thin on the ground round here .... I live near Strichen (near middle of the map) .... for scale the map is about 25 miles across in real life distance .. .... one rapid (pink) charger in Fraserburgh and a few fast (blue ones) .... can't charge at home as I'm a genuine 'off-gridder' .... far too many of the pundits writing about this are deep urbanites who have no idea half the country even exists .... add my need for a direct Defender replacement that can hang out in the forest all day winching trees and punch through 3 ft snowdrifts when it's minus 10 ..... not in my lifetime methinks. ![[Linked Image]](https://www.tm-img.com/images/2021/12/21/Screenshot_20211221-182303_Chrome.jpg) K

Probably not, but then TBF it's not people like you that are the problem. Your carbon footprint even with the Landy and the generator is probably way lower than the vast majority of the population. Although if diesel gets a bit hard to find you might have to convert to Wood Gas :-)

We had a visitation from the Scottish and Southern Engineers over a couple of days during the week, because some people on the lane had a service failure. It turned out that one of the 3 fuses between the transformer and the 240v supply was intermittently faulty, so they replaced all three. I asked the engineer to explain why if we could pull close to 100A from the supply we could not put more than a few kw back and why the DNO had to approve all EV charger installations. His answer wasn't surprising, but was disappointing and confirmed my suspicions that those in Government who believe that Electricity can replace all fossil fuel use and CO2 release are, to put it bluntly, delusional.
Our electricity for 20 houses comes from one transformer that converts 11kv to 240v, 3 phase. Each phase is fused at 100 amps and the assumption is that even though each house on the phase could pull 80 amps they will never do so so the 100 amp fuse id enough. Add EVs, replace gas with electricity and it would need household capacity to double a new transformer with at least 300A per phase which would, in turn, mean new cables and loop connection boxes. He told me that on our loop they would allow only two more home EV chargers. As far as generating power and feeding it back to the grid the capacity of the grid to take additional power is limited by the same 100 amp phase fuses at the transformer. He commented that many applications by land owners to put PV arrays in place were declined simply because of grid limitation and the cost of infrastructure upgrading made the project unviable.
Overall in may rural areas the cost of infrastructure improvement to meet the demands of the "Green Revolution" will make the improvement of mobile phone signals and fast broadband look trivial and is unlikely to be achieved anytime soon. In my opinion whilst new pure ICE cars will not be sold the timeline for stopping the sale of plug in hybrids will slip, and slip, and slip simply because of the cost of infrastructure improvements will be prohibitive.

A big part of the Green Revolution is to achieve a "Modal Shift" in transport and force / encourage people out of their cars.
Cynically, I wonder if a sufficient increase in tax / fuel tax relating to IC vehicles combined with an inadequate provision of infrastructure will achieve the desire to shift people out of their cars with no need to slip any of the timelines.

Saw a nice Hyundai Ioniq 5 in Dorset last weekend... that had just travelled down from Glasgow. So no range anxiety there then! Being Dorset there were not that many EV chargers around either...

They are going to be a long time waiting. Thank god since I dont fancy a small allegedly controlled hydrogen bomb just up the road. And I say that as a Physicist.
