What's the best way to clean it and restore the wool to the original (if possible) whiteness. Obviously I can't toss it into the washing machine. Dry clean?

Carpet cleaner I would have thought or Woolite.

Depending on the degree of dirt, I used to just wipe the inside of mine with a damp cloth with the merest hint of soap ( not washing up liquid ) then let it dry followed by a leather dressing for the other side.
Here for a good time not a long time!!

A really good brush of the sheepskin. (I use an old toothbrush)
Then I run my portable vacuum cleaner across the sheepskin.
Followed by a wipe with a damp cloth, add a tiny amount of liquid wool/silk wash if necessary.
Dry with a hairdryer, which lifts the pile.
