Of all the cars we have had, a Volvo would be my recommendation. One of the big ones that is. We run a Smart Roadster for the use you describe - open top and sporty.

With MoT testing big bangers (BMW 530d etc) can be expensive if malfunctions create lights on the dash...
Agree with above that basic Toyota probably fits the bill

We have an old Toyota Corolla estate, petrol so not very economical but totally reliable and spacious and cheap to buy.

My vote goes to the Honda CRV. Available at all price points, cheap to run, bullet-proof, versatile, and AWD. I had mine from new and kept it 6 years, I only sold it because I retired and simply didn't need it any more. In that time it was completely fault-free and was just as good as the day I bought it.

My parents had a CRV for several years. Nothing wrong with it, it was just looking a bit “tired’. So, they bought another CRV, 2 years old and 2-wheel drive. Seems ok, but not so good for getting in and out of muddy paddocks! This one might get changed sooner, to get back to AWD….

Check out PistonHeads for sale. There are 3 Chevrolet saloons plus other assorted saloons and hatchbacks under £1k.
Over the years I have run some great "Station Cars". Best to drive when it worked was a Lancia HPE. But most reliable a Renault 12. Cost £250. Ran it for 3 years, 12k miles, never serviced it, passed MoT every year for the cost of an MOT. Blew the cylinder head gasket on the M4 at 90MPH and sold it as non-runner for £250, what I paid for it.

As I've mentioned it on another thread, I thought I'd complete this thread .... having had such good service out of my current Rover I ended up getting another from a 'racing pal of a racing pal' .... nice clean Rover 75 Touring with the 2litre BMW diesel .... good solid workhorse with all the trimmings ... full leather, memory seats etc etc .... swished me the 200 miles home from buying it in comfort and pretty short order (decent fuel economy too) So far seems ideal for our general running about needs.

Many thanks for all the suggestions .... they're noted for next time! 🙂

Given the Rover 75 was closely related to the BMW 5 series it is hardly surprising it is good.
It rides better than the BMW... the suspension optimised for UK roads.
