I was planning, when the pipes need replacing, to have the finish where side pipes fit, but rather than cut the wing have the pipes end pointing down to the road.
Not sure if it would sound the same, or worse, but it would avoid the black leg syndrome.....

Leave the pipes alone. You'll be wearing a baseball cap and a hoodie next!

Now you can enjoy washing the salt off it again!

That definitely wasn’t your fault. In fact, I can’t think of anything bad about sidepipes!😎😎

I spoke to a gentleman in Malvern a few years ago who had his S1 converted to sidepipes as I was quite interested bought the alloy trim finishers and a very good price from Long life to do the job. He said they did drone a bit on a long run so as not to upset the co driver gps and wife who let's me drive everywhere with the top down I decided against it, they do look and sound superb though. I must say that of all the cars that have come and gone over the years the old Bmw v8 is the cleanest engine around the exhaust tips no black carbon at all shame we can't pass a petrol station without having a drink Eh........

The Plus 8 has rear pipes, but cut-outs both sides! Sounds terrific, with the option of quiet touring - you do need a friendly MOT station though!! evil oops

The side pipes do have a few wrinkles such as total volume which usually gets you blocked for track days. The single pipes on the S2-S3 only really got loud at higher revs and throttle angles. The later dual pipes (especially with the optional sports cats) go quite a lot louder and deeper.

I would worry about pointing them down at the floor as the standing wave could build up and become a big drone. The Skyline had the option of a single or dual pipes. The big single was horrible at motorway speeds and I swapped to the dual which was a higher note and less wearing.

When we toured in the Coupe which has the dual pipes it was really noisy at 75 but smoothed out at 80. Well that’s my excuse anyway

The GTN I drove at the factory had a bit of a drone but I put that down to the hard top but to be fair when i took the S1 out it was with the top off which creates a different driving experience. Agree with you Alistair 80 mph is a real sweet spot not much rev's on a private road obviously........

I preferred the side pipes and never found them to drone on long journeys. Once you get between 120 & 150 the wind noise is greater.

rofl That would of course be KPH Peter. innocent

Yes the Coupe has a confined space NVH issue that the soft tops do not suffer from. I would love to fit more sound absorbent matt to it but it would mess with the trim which you don't want to do to often.
