I have always wondered why people like to live where the weather is horrible and cars rust but it seems 99% of the worlds population does, anyone care to tell me why. However I guess 99% of Australians live near the beaches and their cars rust as well. I love the beach but happy to have holidays there and keep my cars rust free.
I had a 1989 MX5 until 1998, it was 9 years old without a speck of rust. I owned a Japanese Import 1988 Nissan Silvia S13 until 2020 so 32 years old and had no rust. Canberra is a dry climate and generally things don't rust however I bought a new trailer and within a year the paint had worn off and it has surface rust although I have had cars scraped to bare metal hitting something and not seen surface rust, also cheap garden tools made in China often rust.
I do see rust on older cars mainly in the front guards, from what I can tell people like to park under trees to keep the cars cool and they get covered in leaves which get down into the drainage passages, over the years it turns to compost and rusts the cars from the inside out. I take the wheels off every 6 months to give them a good clean and also take off the guard liners and clean out the build up of leaves. I do this to all my cars and I am amazed how much I get out of cars my wife drives (she likes to park under trees

)

So from my experience the metal used in cars even from Japan since the mid 1980's doesn't rust like whatever sheet metal they use for trailers etc.
