ok, I'm in a pickle (again!). So if anyone can help me get out of it, mucho appreciated!
(and thanks to John for converting attached pic).
The whole reason for this is that I need to replace the heater which is leaking fluid into the footwell. It is the rectangular mesh/fins on the other side of (1).
So far I have removed a lot of screws. I was hoping that if I can just prize (2) off, then the (1) plate can come off and I can get the heater out. I have undone the four bolts in the footwell that hold (2) in place. But (2) does not want to separate from the main plate (3)... which is where I am stuck. Surely I dont have to take out the whole heating unit - do I?

Just guessing, but there is a chance that some sort of sealer may have been used in the fitting of the heater framework to the bulkhead that is now acting as some sort of glue... perhaps if you gently but positively introduce a wall paper scraper into the joint between the two and apply a bit of force something might begin to move..? Wallpaper scrapers can be cut down to a to an inch or so wide if you do not have one that you can fit in..

When I tried to remove my gearbox tunnel, I was convinced that I had missed a screw but it was in fact being held by a mastic sealant. In the case of the heater in question, it would seem most likely that a seal would have been applied at that location to prevent water ingress.

thanks lads - yep - already trying that - and it has released the front - my questions is whether (2) should pry away from (3)?

Sorry to say my heater set up on my mid 80`s +8 is different from that in your picture.
Looking at your picture and just above the yellow arrow for "2" in like like there may be a screw, part hiding under some torn foam..?

ah yes - that's a dummy screw just to throw you off - it has lost its thread so that just keeps on turning - unfortunately not the solution/barrier

Guessing that No1 is suspected to be trapped under No2..? If so then one has to ask why No2 extends as it does beyond the heater box, and if No 1 has a flange bent back and trapped under No2 why might it need No2 to hold it in place, when No1`s flange could be used to retain any such fixing to the bulkhead..?

Perhaps bit more levering required in the area of the dummy screw to try to determine what part No 2 plays in the game..?
