Just woken up my Duratec 06 Plus Four after a longer than usual winter layup. Great to be out on the road again in this good weather but I have been surprised by two problems that I could do with some help/experience on.
First the ecu engine light is on and the reader lists the fault as “EGR A control circuit open”. P0403. My local garage can’t find a sensor on the exhaust system. I’ve had this problem before when starting up after the winter and it has usually sorted itself after the car has run for a while. This year it seems to be lingering.
Second the speedo has stopped working. Dial illumination and mileage reader are both working and the needle gives a slight twitch on starting but no movement after that. I’ve not had the unit out of the dash yet but are there any fixes I can try?
First time with removing the dash. Is it simply removal of three fixing screws and careful tilt?
Any help or suggestions gratefully accepted.

As far as speedo is concerned, (assuming yours is not gearbox driven) , it receives its pulses from a sensor mounted on the inside of the front driver-side brake disc. This is a quite delicate device being essentially a hollow bolt with electronics potted in. It is easily broken off when for instance you wipe away excess grease. With the car jacked up, if you spin the front wheel you should see a tiny pulsing led light when peering into the end of the device. I think Dave W posted on here a year or two ago about replacing the sensor, as there is a specified clearance to be set between the sensor and the bolt head that whizzes by to trigger the pulse.

If you really want to remove the dashboard, as well as the three main screws, you also need to remove the tiny ones underneath that hold the dash to the undertray.
Empty the glove box. Lower the steering wheel. Place some padding across the steering wheel and pull the dash towards you and rotate the top towards you as it comes out.
BEWARE: it is very easy for connectors to become unplugged as you pul it forwards so double check everything is intact before re installing. (The wiring behind my dash was akin to the proverbial rat’s nest...but installed by craftsmen, naturally.)

Forgot to say that if you are looking to see the little LED, you need ignition on and it is quite feint.

Does the heater blower fan work? If not you may have the electronics issue that I had and posted on here. Worth a check

You did say the milometer was working, assume you mean its clocking up the miles which would indicate the the probe is functioning and sending a pulse to the speedo, but as deejay says you can check the LED on the proximity probe to confirm that the probe is good. If it's the speedo unit you should send it to Caerbont (ex Smith Instruments), call Peter Wilkinson at Caerbont and plea your case for a fast turnaround, 01639 732200.
There is a wiring diagram on the Caerbont website for the speedo so you can check that you are sending 12v power to the probe.
I had all the palava when my 2011 Plus 4 Speedo expired.

If you were to lower the dash try to take photos as you lower it of the wiring and disconnect the battery first
