On Friday the radiator level warning light came on when I started the car. After a few minutes it went out. Today I checked the level in the header tank, sure enough it was at, or below, the lower level mark. I had a bottle of BMW Antifreeze, so topped the system up. I'll keep a close eye on this as the BMW N62B48 motor has a "known weakness" in that a coolant transfer pipe that runs in the "V" of the engine under the inlet system can start to leak from the "O" rings that seal the pipe to the cylinder block: there are lots of posts about this on US BMW forums. Water dribbles down on to the garage floor. Repair is very costly in time....if the official BMW procedure is used as it requires a partial engine strip down, removing all the front end including cam chains: 2 days labour.... !! A number of aftermarket solutions exist that are based on cutting out the pipe and fitting a new one that is in 2 parts. Hi Peter, Good idea to check with MMC what Antifreeze as I had a water leak and used BMW antifreeze only to be told by Brands Hatch Morgan that the antifreeze specified by MMC and used was very different and not compatible - I had to get the car trailered to BHM to have it drained and the correct stuff added! I had no idea how critical the correct antifreeze was.

Thanks for the warning...
Why on earth would MMC use their own antifreeze, not BMW specified material?
The BMW stuff is blue.

Hi Peter, Good idea to check with MMC what Antifreeze as I had a water leak and used BMW antifreeze only to be told by Brands Hatch Morgan that the antifreeze specified by MMC and used was very different and not compatible - I had to get the car trailered to BHM to have it drained and the correct stuff added! I had no idea how critical the correct antifreeze was. Allegedly if some non compatible types are mixed it forms gelatinous lumps that can block small internal waterways on modern engines

It looks like the 'telescopic' replacement pipe introduces more O rings & will these later fail ? I would think Simon at SiFab will have come across this issue before, may be worth a chat, Peter ?

According to the handbook the correct coolant should be:
‘Water/Antifreeze mixture 50/50 longlife spec with corrosion inhibitor for aluminium engines all year round’
But what if you’re far from home and don’t have a ready supply of the exact mix to hand?
The advice I’ve been given is if your warning light comes on during the warmer months and you're not able to determine which coolant is already in your engine - top up with distilled water (this will naturally dilute the volume of antifreeze.) And before winter comes flush out your system and reload with the correct mix.

Don't forget HOAT, P HOAT and Si - OAT  Valvoline do a good guide. Older kit like mine uses IAT (I think OAT causes issues with the block). Valvoline
