Just returned from a 1650 mile tour of Ireland. Me in my Duratec +4 and my friend in his GDI +4.
We covered the same journeys one behind the other. We liked to fill up when the gauge was approaching a quarter tank.
But at each fuelling stop, where I put in about 32 litres, he needed 37 litres to fill the tank.
Notable, that his GDI has never had the flash upgrade. So thats around £8 extra on every two thirds of a tank.
Food for thought?

I regularly get 42+ with my 2009 Duratec whereas my friend struggles to get 40 with his 2015 GDI

Depends on how driven. During a track day my GDI guzzles it’s juice at about 20mpg but during normal road use it gets close to 40 mpg.

Do you take that information from the little digital screen at the bottom of the speedometer, or do you calculate it "by hand" from an empty fuel tank? My digital calculated consumption is nowhere near 37mpg (see thread about fuel tank capacity), and I had the ECU flash (just "Enhanced", not yet "Clubsport") as well.

I don't use the display, its calculated from mileage and fuel used.

I take mine from the digital readout. I checked it using the "filling the tank" method when I first got the car and found it to be very accurate.
