I need a little of the collective wisdom please.

My 2000 3.9 Plus 8 14CUX has developed a new problem, if I turn it off in traffic when it’s hot it won’t restart, just spins over without firing. I have to sit at the roadside for 5-10 minutes after which it fires up OK.

I’ve got a new Bosch coil in stock which I’ll fit, but any ideas what it might be please?

Coil substitution sounds a good call and then I'd be going for the ignition amplifier also known to fail under high temperature.

Thanks - the ignition module is fairly new (2,000 miles on it) but after I’ve swapped and checked the coil I’ll refit the old one if I still have the problem.

With items like ignition amplifiers, coils and idle air control valves don't buy the cheap ones. Get the original or OEM spec. or the more expensive replacement parts. The cheapest replacement parts often fail out of the box or not long after and you assume they are ok because they're new!! Voice of experience!

Faulty cam sensor can be a cause of hot-start failure ..... if you can find one for substitution it's worth a try.

Have seen hitting it with a squirt of freezer spray when it's in non-start mode as a diagnostic check suggested ... but I'd be careful of thermal shock.

Don’t think your 14CUX will have a cam sensor. I changed the coil on mine a couple of years ago for genuine Bosch.

If you have Rover Gauge, see what the fuel temp sensor is saying - it’s likely to be out of range and sending spurious signals to the ECU. Not a cheap sensor but still buy a good one if it’s found defective.

I'm sure you're right Grumpy .... just a generic observation regarding the engine management of cars (not Morgans) I've had from that era.

I don't know much specific about the later Morgans

I had exactly these symptoms with my 93 +8 (also running 14CUX injection) - it turned out to be a faulty (new) injection relay. I worked mine out by buying some NOID lights (£15 from Demon Tweeks, IIRC); these allow you to see whether there is any power getting to the injectors. Apparently it is quite common for these relays to be duff, even straight out of the box.

The replacement ignition module is OEM, genuine prince of darkness one so may well be suspect…
