I've ordered a smaller steering wheel so that should give me the clearance I need. I'm still looking at lowering the seat.

I had a 1959 Aston some years ago that I struggled to get my athletic frame in an out of. So I had a removable steering wheel fitted, which made life much easier. Might be a solution?

Re the securing of the bolt heads...I would have fitted socket head bolts if I had the right size. An Allen key or similar socket would make it easy then. Luckily the small Stilson was ideal.

I normally use needle nose Mole Grips but have also seen screwdriver slots cut into bolt heads, not deep and doubt it compromised strength as they only need to be held lightly as once the nut torque comes on they hold tight anyway.

This is what I ended up doing, using M8 socket head bolts. Before that I took a Forstner bit to the wooden rails and cut out enough so I could secure the bolt to the rail with a nut that would then sit inside the pocket so created. Then it was a matter of lowering the seat onto the rails so the protruding bolts would go through the holes in the floor. Although this worked well for tightening, it was a bit of a faff to get the bolts to line up, hence the move to the socket heads.

Thanks for all the info. I'm going to see how much more clearance I get with the 13" steering wheel. If it's not enough it's off to lower the seats.

I opted to get a smaller steering wheel. I looked at a lot of different places and most were around $ 300 USD. So I went to my go to place Amazon.

I got the wheel I wanted for $ 150 and it's a perfect fit. Looks exactly like the old wheel. Took 10 minutes to swap it out with the old wheel.

Now the steering wheel doesn't hit my legs anymore and I can actually easily get in and out of the car.
