Ok I start with an apology for introducing a modicum of thread drift, but thought there might be some interest in the advances of EV in racing... I have to admit I have never watched an E car race and having watched the vid in the link below, I doubt I could manage to do so unless with the sound down, and for me the sounds of engines make up a high percentage of the magic.. OK so the sound engineers could have made a better job of mixing the vehicle to voice levels but...?? https://youtu.be/GiYT3ftvsYIWhilst it may be part and parcel of the theatre of racing, I can assure you that anyone who lives close to a racing circuit will not miss the background mechanical theatre of noise they create. I never understand why leaving a race track with a ringing sensation in your ears somehow increased your enjoyment. Sometime silence/quiet is golden.

I would have to disagree. Being only a couple of miles from Santa Pod I love tinkering in the garden listening to the glorious soundtrack going on. Off to the 'Main Event' a week on Sunday. Good line up of Top Fuelers, Funny Cars and Jet Powered Dragsters. Earplugs complulsory. They often have some kind of flypast at big events - Dakota/Lancaster etc and we get a good view from the garden, as well as being on several flight paths from/to Sywell and Shuttleworth. The other benefit is it drowns out the continuous shouts, squeals and screams from the local sprogs and associated families. Give me the sound of a 10,000bhp V8 on full chat over a wailing child every time. I do enjoy a bit of silence at times, especially on holiday, camping in the wilds when the only soundtrack is nature.

As they say each to their own........if its something you enjoy then absolutely fine but not everyone does, I assume Santa Pad was there when you bought your house, so something you have always lived with. I find eg when we stay with friends in Sunningdale who are on the Heathrow flight path, the continuous flights overhead are not something I enjoy, yet I live within a mile or so of several airfields with helicopters and the occasional RAF jet taking off and landing at BAE Warton to a thunderous roar by comparison, can be eventful but not a nuisance by comparison to Sunningdale air traffic. I suppose in part it's what you are used to.
They recently built housing on the old Pontins site either side of the end Blackpool airport main runway with a railway line between the housing estate and the runway. Both the airport runway and the railway line have been there before the houses were built, people knew they were there when they bought the houses but the noise complaints from the residents never cease. It's a strange old world.
With being so close to Blackpool Airport we do enjoy the Red Arrows and the Historic flights of the Spitfire, Hurricane and Lancaster as they use Blackpool as an overnight base for all the local air shows. Nothing quite like watching the historic flight seemingly just clipping the sand dunes ...at the end of the runway as they bank low to the left and head to Southport just across the Ribble estuary.........you can feel the engine noise pass through you.

Formula E car came to Shelsley Walsh a couple of years back .... Jaguar team with their top pro driver and associated support crew .... did some runs up the hill (I think to take the EV record for PR pusposes) .... what an underwhelming experience .... just an annoying whine .... and slow (will look back but I recall it was no faster than me ... an amateur 70 year old in a self-built car based round a 40 year old Formula Ford) ..... looked like something out of a computer game but can't say I'd bother watching the series.

Ps it did a 30.46 .... there's saloons quicker .... my PB up there is 29.60 ..... loads of razamatazz but the reality was dull

I feel a Hybrid is not a electric car with a petrol engine when you need more range to go out of town but a Petrol car with an electric motor giving more power when needed or when going slow in traffic or driving around the local car park. As I stated my sons RAV4 Hybrid will only do full EV mode below 30kph (18mph). As others have stated a Prius gets 69MPG with the engine going 70% of the time because the electric engine is used when the petrol engine is at its most inefficient.
They suit where I live, 3 km's of 50kph zone to get out of the suburb and I am on a 80kph road with everyone doing about 90kph.
I would be much happier if Toyota etc. offered a plug in version for Australia. I don't understand why, maybe the invertor to charge the battery weighs too much for the benefit it will get.
I absolutely hate Diesel. I guess it is good for new cars but riding my bike I often smell that horrible smell and get covered in black soot from some older Diesel driving past, it seems as soon as they are out of warranty people get them serviced at other places than the dealership and they get tuned to make a lot of soot.
I also had my most expensive trip in a Diesel. Visited the UK in September 2006 to visit relatives and hired a Golf from Europe car at Heathrow. They said we upgraded you to a Seat Diesel which will save you some money, it went fine but when I got back to Heathrow the closest petrol stations were out of diesel, I drove around and no Diesel anywhere just nice good old Petrol. I went back to Europe car and was told I had to return it full and gave me the addresses for a few more petrol stations, still no Diesel. I ended up going back and saying there is nothing I can do but put petrol in it which I guess you would not be happy with, the grumpy guy said well we have heaps but we charge a filling fee, I said well just fill it up and I will pay as I have a plane to catch, he said we will do it later and charge your credit card bill. When I got home no letters from Europe car, no e-mails but my next credit card bill had a charge from them for $513AUD. I have no idea what their per litre rate was but the exchange rate was 2.48 so a bit over 200 UK Pounds. Even with todays high prices I have not put in over $100AUD. So much for the free upgrade saving me money.

I watched a FormulaE a couple of times and just cannot get engaged with it. I know the current F1 cars are not exactly an Aero 8 with sidepipes (and I know this is actually more efficient) but they still make it more of an experience than FormulaE. I will swear my old Scalextric set sounded just like it.
Everyone loves a Morgan. Even me, unless it's broken again.

Not at home.. 7.5p/kWh, but I agree, public charging is getting more costly and according to one report it is almost as costly to charge an EV at a motorway filling station as it is to fuel a car for the same range. I've had an EV for 12 months, but at this rate I'll go back to petrol PHEV before too long.

That's really interesting from a hands on established user Peter, I think only you and Shooter have the real power wall equipment at home.

The Mercedes C300e looks as though it might be a viable alternative to the Tesla. 55 miles on the battery, a nice 2 litre Mercedes 4 cylinder turbo petrol engine. Not as quick, but back to Mercedes comfort....
