Folks,

So I wanted to do some preventative maintenance on my front brakes (2012 build Plus 4 with Caparo brakes). It's tending to pull to one side under braking.

The silly question is how do you get the pad retaining pins out. I managed to squeeze one of the springs out by pushing it by hand, freeing up the pin. But the other one is too stubborn for this. What is the standard process? I have checked on here, Dave's book and GoMog to no avail.

Thanks
Nick

The H clips are easily damaged if you are not careful but you can get spares from Rimmer Bros..
Gently press down adjacent to the pin, on the clip nearest you with a small screwdriver and hold it down. Then push the pin through the hole and away from you using a suitable drift or whatever you have to hand, that is a slightly smaller diameter than the pin. Once the head of the pin has gone past the H clip, now press down and hold down the opposite clip and push the pin out through the back.

Thanks Doug.
I did try that but "gentle pushing" had no effect. I shall now try "moderate pushing" and source some new clips :-)

Thanks

If it helps Nick the caliper pins are dumb bell shaped. This allows the ears of H spring clips to locate on narrower inner diameter and so hold pins captive. It could be the fatter ends have partially seized in caliper body although not normally a tight fit. A little releasing agent may help therefore.

Might be worth trying to rotate them in situ - wrap some tape round the jaws of some pliers/molegrips to avoid damaging the pins.

Ooh my reply disappeared.

The pins are not seized - as they move to and fro a little until they his the clips. The one that I did get out came out with no force. I'll buy some replacement clips before going further!

Thanks all.

It's a rite of passage the first time you do this. It isn't obvious even though it's a really simple design.

I accidently broke one of the clips on mine, I ordered a complete new set of 4 on eBay (Item no 274704118935) £5.99 for Austin Princess Front Caliper Brake Fitting Kit £5.99

Mine is a 2016 4/4, not sure if they are the same as a 2012 Plus 4 ?
