6 days into ownership and still finding my way around the car - 70th Anniversary 4/4

The car had/has a satnav mounted under the dash which doesn’t seem to work. It powers up but the gps isn’t updating my location

Anyway, I want to replace it and there’s a panel under the dash the the current fitting it attached to - is the panel normal fit?

Also, what is the small button for - any ideas?

If you are mounting the satnav under that plate you are obstructing the signals from the satellites..... dont forget that those signals have travelled 20,000 kms to get to you and any obstruction will weaken/ block the signal if that close to the antenna..

Hi C2RM,

The plate is standard but sorry, I can't help with the aftermarket black button.
It can get a bit tight down there with the handbrake, radio and heater vents plus I could never get a good viewing angle.
So, best of luck.

Regards

Yes poor location of Satnav antenna which is probably integral to unit, and definately not a standard fit. This would likely have been explained in the fitting instruction's. Although impractical, its been proven that a GPS receiver will work on top of the transmission tunnel slightly forward of gear lever. It needs to see the sky unimpeded although the canvas hood wouldn't affect too much, ditto for glass.

Think the button is for “Traffic master”. The system monitors traffic flows to warn you of hold ups ahead. I only got this info by googling and have no experience of it myself.

John, you have cruise control on your roadster? I am now intrigued, as I have been looking at aftermarket stuff however seems I would need a few gadgets notably a Mondeo steering wheel. What have you got fitted?

Wow, there's a blast from the past, I'd forgotten all about Traffic Master. It used to come as standard on Vauxhalls in the 1990s. The system was apparently retired in June 2012, according to Honest John, presumably superseded by newer technologies. I'd offer that button to a transport museum.
