I contacted the manufacturer of the Smiths gauges (link provided by fouracre on the Mogtalk site - thanks). Received a prompt reply from the MD of CAI Instruments, Gavin Roberts, as follows:- Hi Nick
Misting in instruments is one of our bug bears with the older design instruments, several things have been tried over the years including sachets of silicon to absorb moisture , coatings that are applied to the inside of the glass and several other ideas, the base problem is that the gauge is not sealed and if it were it would have to be sealed with air of zero humidity inside, with air of the humidity that occurs this time of year inside when the gauge is activated through the movements and the illumination, heat is created, the air inside then condenses against the cooler walls of the instrument, either the case or the glass, because glass takes longer to heat than the case because of its thermal conductivity the problem usually exhibits itself there. We have cured the problems over the years by using instrument movements that do not generate heat ie using stepper motors and LED illumination, the current 3 in 1 is of an older design, we are working on a design to change this and will take the design to Morgan shortly.
Hope this is of some comfort
Best regards

I thought that was a very courteous reply: although it does not offer a remedy, at least it explains the phenomenon.

I had a small amount of clear PVC in stock. The sort used for tax disc holders. I cut four small circles and have applied these to the small gauges. This provides almost double glazing - an invisible plastic layer over the glass which retains heat inside and stops cold air touching the glass. It hasn't stopped misting completely, but it's improved. The fuel gauge is the worst offender, The big gauges rarely mist at all.

That's it! The next doorstepping monkey I get round here from Everest, Anglian etc will be set a challenge ... "No job too small eh? Let's see you double glaze my gauges then" :snowlaugh:

I kept thinking about the reply to Nick from Smiths Guages and wondered why, if the problem is heat generated by the bulbs, they dont use LEDs on these instruments as they do on more modern designs. I realise they also mention the mechanism as well but surely it is worth a try. I searched on the internet and I found this site that offers LED replacement bulbs for instruments. Croll down a bit to find them. http://www.norbsa02.freeuk.com/goffyleds.htmI don't know what style of bulb the Morgan instruments use but this site seems to offer a good range.

Hi Dave I've been away from TM for a while (and the UK for that matter) I was wondering if you had managed to sort the gauges misting up on the Roadster, I was annoyed at first then it became part of the charm in an odd sort of way. Regards Andy
