Advise and help

I have a 1983 Morgan 4/4 four-seater, I took it for a drive today parked up, went for a cup of tea came out of the cafe walked back to where the Morgan was parked ( in a car park) put the key in the ignition and it just carried on turning around although the ignition light came on, I was also able to remove the steering barrel along with the black plastic surround, tried to fiddle with it to get it back in, eventually, it did, and the car started and I drove home, however, it appears the barrel won't stay attached to the main part of the steering lock and there does not appear to be any way to hold it and the black surround in place. I don't know if somebody has tried to mess with it while I was away. , I am able to start the car and if I drove it, would the steering lock engage? while turning the wheel, this could be very dangerous. And if I can't get the barrel to attach to the lock again, I will have to buy a new one, what car does it come off from? and how easy is it to replace? I would appreciate advice. and any recommendations

Thanks, Swordfish
